6A Boys Pre-State Team Rankings Georgia Ranking Committee Nov 4, 2015

Very little movement in the Final Class Ranking of the Fall except for Roswell shooting up to 7th after a great race at 5-AAAAAA. Marietta looks unbeatable on 11-7. The 2-4 Podium spots will be wildly contested on what's forecasted to be a beat up, sloppy course in the afternoon.

6A Girls Team Rankings Week Ending 10-18 Georgia Ranking Committee Oct 21, 2015

Coach Wood really shook up the 6A Girls Team Rankings as every team in the top 10 moved either up or down. South Forsyth may be slowly closing the gap back on Northview heading into Region. Etowah ran great moving up 3 spots after their performance at Coach Wood. North Paulding tore it up bbreaking bad into 9th. *All teams designated 11th are in no particular order*

6A Boys Team Rankings Week Ending 9/27 Georgia Ranking Committee Sep 30, 2015

There was no movement amongst the top 6 squads from last week with Marietta's Varsity, Brookwood and Mill Creek all off. Milton was the top 6A school at Wingfoot, and Peachtree Ridge & Etowah ran split squads last Saturday. Walton is back on the 'Watch List' after a 17:19 team average at Alligator Lake (FL)

6A Girls Team Rankings Week Ending 9/13 Georgia Ranking Committee Sep 14, 2015

6A Girls was very similar to the Boys as carrollton and Double Dip had a heavy influence on this week's team rankings. West Forsyth had a solid win at Ortho, Milton traveled well to Knights Crossing taking 2nd. There was no movement from 5-10 and the 'Watch list changed a bit with Alpharetta now on the 'Radar'

6A Boys Team Rankings Week Ending 9/13 Georgia Ranking Committee Sep 14, 2015

Milton sits atop the 6A Boys Rankings after their 2nd place finish at Knights Crossing up in Virginia without Jack Bluth and their #4. Carrollton Orthopedic and Coach Benson DD easily helped sort out the Weekly Rankings with top teams going head to head. Mill Creek was 2nd at Carrollton without Sam Costa (ACT) Brookwood ran their JV, Peachtree Ridge was off. Grayson had a good race winning Covered Bridge. Everyone should be full strength at the Gwinnett County (onsite coverage) and Fulton County Championships next Saturday

Saucony Battle of Atlanta Girls Preview Bruce Taylor Aug 27, 2015

The Varsity Girls race at Saucony Battle of Atlanta should be a 'wing dinger' as well with its most competitive field ever. The has grown from 22 Teams in 2008 to 76 Squads this season and has evolved into one of the premiere HS/MS meets in the State. The Nash Farms course is a 2.5 loop 95% grass course. Most consider the course moderate in difficulty and it is the most spectator friendly course in Georgia. Spectators are able to see over 90% of each race.

6A Girls Pre-Season Outlook Mike Demarest Aug 7, 2015

A surprising amount of prominent athletes on the 6A circuit return for the 2015 campaign. Based on those returners, I’ve devised the following pre-season rankings heading into this season along with a couple highlights of those returners. NOTE: These are NOT State predictions which often weigh state meet history and other intangibles into play. This is my attempt to best make sense of the top returning teams without merely looking at a virtual meet.

6A Boys Pre-Season Outlook Mike Demarest Aug 6, 2015

While 6A lost some talent at the top, a surprising amount of prominent athletes on the 6A circuit return for the 2015 campaign. Based on those returners, I’ve devised the following pre-season rankings heading into this season along with a couple highlights of those returners. 6A Boys- Marietta Rules Team Race, Stockwell Races To Overall Win Bruce Taylor Nov 9, 2014

You had to be there and watch the setting and atmosphere change as 4A began to race and the 6A schools and their rabid fans begin to arrive and populate the surrounding start/finish area and line both sides of the big hill below the school on top.  The buzz could be felt in the air as the 6A Boys headed towards the start line and warmed up, doing runouts waiting for some sloooow AA girls to finish their stroll.  Tension and anticipation mounted as squads toed the line and thousands of their faithful fans, jv runners roared as the race began...Marietta went to work taking care of business and no fewer than 10 guys mixed it up within 25 meters of each other till the end as Davis Stockwell emerged victorious...

Week 8 Ga.MileSplit Class 6A Team Rankings Georgia Ranking Committee Oct 14, 2014

Most of the heavy hitters in 6A were on the sidelines last week resting up for the slugfest/mud test at Coach Wood this coming Saturday. South Forsyth made some moves at Asics, Etowah's Girls and Cherokee's boys moved up after their wins at Cherokee County.  Nearly All the Big Boys and Girls will be at Coach Wood.

Cherokee County Varsity Races ReCap Tyrom Brown Oct 11, 2014

It was a tremendous race today at Boling Park, the location of the Cherokee County XC Championships the last 4 years. The 6 teams of Cherokee County lined up eager to take home the championship trophy. No dodging or ducking competition, each team sent out most of its top runners to earn bragging rights on a day that was less than ideal as early rains had left a soggy starting and finishing area and standing water was scattered everywhere on the course. Etowah proved its dominance once again with Cherokee’s Scarborough breaking up the winning streak this year with his victory in the Varsity boys’ race. Rolls of thunder could be heard in the distance as the Varsity harriers flew along the course, and with flashes of lighting just as the JV boy’s race was about to start coaches decided to suspend the JV races until Monday evening. A torrent of rain began to fall for about an hour after the field cleared.

Cherokee County Meet Preview Tyrom Brown Oct 9, 2014

Last Fall Owen Bailey of Woodstock kept Etowah from the complete sweep at the Cherokee County Championships.  His victory in the Boy's Varsity was the only blemish Etowah had on either gender and at both levels (JV and Varsity).  All four team victories went to Etowah including an impressive display of depth at the Boy's JV level in which the first 8 finishers were Eagles. However, 2014 might not find Cherokee County so willing to hand over all of their trophies and medals so easily.

Week 7 Ga.MileSplit Class 6A Team Rankings Georgia Ranking Committee Oct 8, 2014

How All-Class Rankings went reflected how 6A was affected.  IMHO, no one gained any ground on Marietta's boys though Mill Creek and Walton ran great. Lakeside DeKalb's boys had a sweet race at Wendys cracking the top 10. Northview's girls were off and attached to a local 5k event. (per their school webpage) Mill Creek's gals were 11th in the ROC at Great American solidfying their #2 ranking. South Forsyth dominated at Mountain moving into 3rd. Etowah's lady Eagles ran well at Wendys slicing into 5th and Marietta's lasses are beginning to sniff Podium possibilities after placing 17th at Great American.

Week 7 Ga.MileSplit All-Class Team Rankings Georgia Ranking Committee Oct 7, 2014

Take a Bottle, Shake it Up...Great American and Wendys (both NC) certainly affected All-Class Rankings this past week as no fewer than 6 Girls teams and 7 Boys teams had movement. Marietta's boys were 5 points away from winning the ROC at Great American and are stirring the pot in the Community as one of the greatest teams in recent GA XC history.  Hopefully, they will get some respect Regionally from MileSplit National. Walton's boys catapulted up to 4th after Jesse Owens (AL) Mill Creek continues to improve after their Great American performance cruising to 3rd.  Marist faced down tough comp at Great American staying put at #1. South Forsyth moved to 4th after Mountain Invite, Etowah enjoyed the beef at Wendys re-entering the top 10, and Marietta's girls had a solid race at Great American showing signs of their pre-season potential.

11th Annual Darlington CC Festival Preview Bruce Taylor Sep 26, 2014

33 High School and 31 Middle School squads will line it up Saturday morning on the campus of Darlington to do battle at the 11th Annual Darlington CC Festival. The festival was the brainchild of departed Coach (to Germany) Alan Parrish and this season Coach Katie Ellis is at the comm. Marietta and Etowah look to be running at full strength as well as a few other ranked teams in their respective classes. Quite a 2A showdown will be settled as Darlington and Wesleyan tangle at full strength...Mill Creek is running their JV squad after a great meet at Gwinnett County last week.

Warpath Invitational Preview Taylor Ford Sep 11, 2014

Warpath looks like an interesting meet even with a few teams not running their varsity. On this quick course where only two have broken 15:40, Logan Poteet will be trying to reset his own course record. This 3 loop course has had some changes based on previous events held at the course. This year the middle school runners will be running last which puts the Varsity Girls start at 8am. This race looks like its setting up to be a good race to run a season PR for most.

6A Team Rankings Week Ending 9-6 Bruce Taylor Sep 9, 2014

Marietta's Boys stand pat, just like All-Class. Peachtree Ridge moves into 2nd after winning at Spurs & Spikes Invite with a 16:30 team average. Etowah and West Forsyth are 3rd/4th this week after a battle at Double Dip. Milton Boys moved up 2 spots to 5th after their win at Covered Bridge. Northview's Girls rocketed to the top of 6A Girls after winning handily at Covered Bridge with a 20:00 team average. South Forsyth  rises to 3rd after Double Dip.

All-Class Rankings Week Ending 9-6 Bruce Taylor Sep 9, 2014

This week's All-Class Rankings have Marietta again at the top after a dominant performance at Cobb County. Etowah's boys cracked the top 10 moving up to 4th while Brookwood dropped 6 spots after Covered Bridge. Marist's and Northview's Girls rightfully moved to the top of the All-Class Girls rankings after their performances at Double Dip and Covered Bridge.

Marist Girls Dominate, Etowah Boys Claim Narrow Win at Double Dip Bruce Taylor Sep 6, 2014

At the Coach Roy Benson Double Dip Invitational a few teams bared their fangs and showed how good they can be this season. Marist's girls as usual were too deep and strong winning by 49 points with Morgan Ilse taking overall champ. John Green from West Forsyth let it all hang out earning a major invite overall title. West Forsyth's program had a great day overall and Etowah's Boys walked away with the Boys team title by 2 points.   Image by Kevin Carnahan

6A Girls Pre-Season Rankings #2 Bruce Taylor Aug 13, 2014

These are subjective rankings (not computer generated); they take into account returning team rankings, team rankings in the 1600 and 3200 from outdoor track, and a school's "Improvement Rating."  Improvement Rating is a metric developed by researching the improvement in a team's final place at State from 2011-2013. Each category is given rank points and added up coming to a final point total. Etowah Eagles should be amongst the top tier 6A Girls squads this Fall.

The Burrito Mile is back for the 3rd year in a row! Taylor Ford Apr 15, 2014

The Burrito Mile is back for the 3rd year in a row! Last year the boys winner was Alex Johnson in 6:47, and Jenn Cook in 9:04. Alex Johnson won a tight race over Etowah Alum Ryan Cross. This year we are hoping for a bigger turnout, and much stronger competition. We are holding the race at Etowah High School on May 17th at 10am. This year we are bringing back the 4x800 to back up the main event!

6A Girls Athletes of the Week ending 4-1 Bruce Taylor Apr 2, 2014

6A Girls had quite a week themselves with 2 athletes being selected as the co- 6A Girls 'Athletes of the Week.  Candace Hill (super frosh) from Rockdale County and Akua Obeng-Akrofi  of Archer HS. These 2 are heading into an ultimate showdown down in Albany in the 100 and 200 meter dashes barring injury.

6A Girls Athletes of the Week ending 3-24 Bruce Taylor Mar 25, 2014

The Cobb County Track and Field Championships dominated the 6A choices for Athletes of the Week. We really had a tough choice here for the overall 'AOW", but to throw a change up, Leena Morris of Etowah HS is chosen as the top athlete. Every girl in their category though was very deserving...

6A Girls Team Power Rankings thru 3-18 Bruce Taylor Mar 19, 2014

In the infamous words of Oscar Winner Matthew McConaughay,  "Alright, Alright, Alright.."  McEachern is a little heavy on points in the Individual Sprints (around 20-25) keeping Westlake actually at the top of the 6A Girls Team Power Rankings.  Your gonna have to be in Albany the 2nd week of May to see how this ultimately shakes out. Archer is in 3rd place thanks to their Throws and Relays with Grayson, Campbell, Marietta, Parkview and Etowah bunched together all in contention for GHSA Team Awards down in Albany.   These rankings were calculated by scoring the rankings as a meet. We scored 12 deep for individuals and 12 deep for relays. For example, for individuals 1st place received 12 points for their team, on down to 1 point for 12th place.

GHSA Girls AAAAAA State Preview Travis Gower Nov 6, 2013

This may be the only race with a clear favorite, oh wait, favorites. Peachtree Ridge and Brookwood have been the top two teams all season. Currently, Peachtree Ridge has a 2 to 1 advantage head to head, but by a combined 3 points margin of victory. If either or both the Lady Lions and Lady Broncos don’t have a good day, their lie some Lady Hoyas and Lady Blue Devils ready to pounce.

GHSA Boys AAAAAA State Preview Travis Gower Nov 6, 2013

2013 is a year of parity for the largest classification in Georgia Cross Country. Both in team and individual races, there are no clear favorites in the way that has become the custom in recent years. Coaches will be busy doing quick scores in anticipation of the team outcome, even shooting video of the finish. This will be race for the ages..

5-AAAAAA Walton Boys Rise Up and Raider Girls Fight Off Etowah, Roswell for Region Title Bruce Taylor Nov 3, 2013

This was definitely one of the hottest contests of the day in a very well run meet by Etowah.  The course was in great shape, but some sun and wind might have affected a few runners... Walton rose up and swept the Region 5-AAAAAA titles against ranked opponents. Kenan Farmer won the Boys overall title in 15:44 leading the attack for Walton. The 6A girls state championship team race is going to be a treat a real XC fan should not mix. We all know about the wars Brookwood and Peachtree Ridge's gals had this season, but the 5-AAAAAA girls region race was just as competitive today.Avery Bussjager worked it at Boling Park taking the girls overall in 18:19, and good thing she did, beating game Etowah squad by a single point.

Wendy's (NC) ReCap for Georgia's Cross Country Squads Taylor Ford Oct 7, 2013

Here is a recap of the Wendy's Invitational held at McAlpine Park, just east of Charlotte, NC. As most of you in the Community are aware of McAlpine Greenway is also the venue for the Foot Locker South Regional. Some highly ranked Georgia schools made it an overnighter including Etowah, Flowery Branch, Westminster and Lambert.

Great races today at Darlington School who hosted another great event.  The Girls Varsity race featured a monumental showdown between 2 of the top runners all-class with Tayler Tuttle just holding off a hard charging Morgan Isle. Michael Thurston pulled away the 2nd half of the Boys race in 15:52 for the win. The course and finish area was immaculate and hats off to Coach Parrish and his crew of Darlington vols who did a great job. Marist took both Varsity team titles with Etowah swooping down grabbing both runnerup honors.

But Brookwood was able to edge Peachtree Ridge this time in Gwinnett as they swapped spots on our list.

GHSA Class 2A,3A,4A,5A,6A XC State Championship Previews Georgia Ranking Committee Nov 7, 2012

This season, the course at Carrollton has ran slower, and may have been lengthened a few meters which should favor the 'strength' runners. At press-time, it has been discussed that mats may possibly be covering the many pavement crossings which has been a sore subject for XC purists as the growth of Carollton Schools has stirred the pot enough for a few schools willing to loan the mats they have to cover the pavement. This article will include 2A thru 6A State Previews only. The weather for raceday looks very promising at this time and bodes well for fast times  http://www.weather.com/weather/wxdetail3/USGA0096  6A...we have been saving the Best for Last, and here it is from Ga.MileSplit.com,  thanks to Pre1962 as expounds his unique and detailed breakdown for the Community....Ga.MileSplit.com and GATFXC would like to thank all the Rankers and Runner of the Week Committee members for the tough, time consuming efforts put forth this season to rank each class along with  contributing  articles and selections. This often is a thankless endeavor, as the Community is eager to differ on selections. We care about the kids, programs, coaches, fans and parents who support the programs and athletes. Good Luck to everyone in Carrollton and once again congrats to the Class A Winners, Podium teams, All-State individuals and volunteers that made it happen!
