Ok, clearly Milton is on the verge of their first XC State Title. In other interesting news, could Gwinnett county fail to have a podium team including an end to Brookwood's amazing podium streak?I doubt it and I think we will get a better idea at Coach Wood, Saturday really seemed to have a strange feel on not any team completely on...except for Milton of course. Weather looked to be an issue coming into this meet late Friday, but, after the course got a good soakin' overnight, it seemed to drain quite well by the early 'dark' start of the Championship Boys race. A thick blanket of mist enveloped the fields at first, but, as the morning progressed, it steadily rose up to reveal the beautiful, flat course ahead.
Some great performances from the Boys 'ROWs' including 6A's Andrew Kent of Lakeside DK and from 5A, the 'Branch's' Jake Shewbert .

You had to be there and watch the setting and atmosphere change as 4A began to race and the 6A schools and their rabid fans begin to arrive and populate the surrounding start/finish area and line both sides of the big hill below the school on top. The buzz could be felt in the air as the 6A Boys headed towards the start line and warmed up, doing runouts waiting for some sloooow AA girls to finish their stroll. Tension and anticipation mounted as squads toed the line and thousands of their faithful fans, jv runners roared as the race began...Marietta went to work taking care of business and no fewer than 10 guys mixed it up within 25 meters of each other till the end as Davis Stockwell emerged victorious...
Region meets listed on the XC Calendar began this past Thursday. 1-AAAAAA, 4-AAAAA, 2-AAAAAA, 6-AAAAA and 5-AAA took care of business early giving their athletes an extra week of rest for those Q' for Carrollton on 11-8. There were no real surprises in the outcome of any except for just 2 Girls teams coming out of 5-AAA. Region time always brings into question the GHSA qualifying process as a few teams make it in just by having 5 runners cross the finish line as opposed to teams in super tough regions being left out that would more than likely be top 10 (even possibly Podium contenders) at State. Abbas Abbkar of Clarkston is pictured above.
Its hard to argue that Reilly Friedman's 3rd place 15:15 finish in the 'Race of Champions' at Great American is not the choice for the Week 7 Boys All-Classes 'Runner of the Week' . Click on the article header to find out who were the ROWs by Class, including 1A Public!
How All-Class Rankings went reflected how 6A was affected. IMHO, no one gained any ground on Marietta's boys though Mill Creek and Walton ran great. Lakeside DeKalb's boys had a sweet race at Wendys cracking the top 10. Northview's girls were off and attached to a local 5k event. (per their school webpage) Mill Creek's gals were 11th in the ROC at Great American solidfying their #2 ranking. South Forsyth dominated at Mountain moving into 3rd. Etowah's lady Eagles ran well at Wendys slicing into 5th and Marietta's lasses are beginning to sniff Podium possibilities after placing 17th at Great American.
It was a hot one at Clinton Nature Preserve as 42 schools, including many of the top rated teams in their respective classes warmed up early and raced with a few surprises.. Clarkston's Boys came out strong winning their race as did Woodward. Forsyth Central displayed their strength placing 2nd behind Clarkston. Alex Murfee had the quickest Boys time in 15:54. Blessed Trinity's girls bested St.Pius in Race 1 while Cambridge came out on top in Race 2. Kathryn Foreman as usual disapeared early having the best performance of the meet for girls in hotter conditions at 18:24.
For the 5A Boys 'Athlete of the Week' ending 4-1 Aaron Jones of South Paulding HS blasted away at Marietta FNL meet to a 10.85 and 21.70 earning co- overall 'AOW' for 5A Boys. William Johnson from Lakeside DeKalb was also a co- 'AOW' after his very fast 10.7/21.65 at the DeKalb County Championships.
Northview out of Duluth had firmly established themselves as the team to beat early October and the 'Stage' at Carrollton didn't deter them as the Bolts' struck quickly, seizing their first Girls Cross Country team and Individual Championship in school history, Lindsay Billings ran a strong race, never losing pace separating from 2012 champ Alex Cameron defining herself as one of the top girls in Georgia and a lock to make the Atlanta Track Club's Foot Locker South 'Team Georgia' squad who had their best team finish ever in 2012.
The ladies’ side has turned into a three team battle for the title with regionals behind us. Overall, it’s been a fun and exciting season and can’t wait to watch all the drama unfold on Saturday. On the individual end, Lindsay Billings has established herself as a top-5 all-class runner with impressive recent performances at Coach Wood and region. Good luck to everyone who’s competing.
At the home of the DeKalb County meet on the Druid Hills MS course, Dunwoody, led by ace Alex Cameron fought off Lakeside-DeKalb taking the Girls 6-AAAAA region title. Those Futbol loving Clarkston boys, won their first region title in nearly 10 years besting traditional power Lakeside DeKalb by 12 points. Davis Stockwell from Lakeside secured the overall win in 16:23.
In a meet that wasn't even on the Calendar, the season's first results from DeKalb meets submitted was the County Championship held at Druid Hills MS. Its an interesting meet format as Marist has been excluded from competing for years now, leaving it to Lakeside-DeKalb to dominate nearly every Fall. But, hold on thar' Bobalooee, those dashing young men from Clarkston continued to amaze as they claimed the Boys team title and Dunwoody's girls took the team titles.
This season, the course at Carrollton has ran slower, and may have been lengthened a few meters which should favor the 'strength' runners. At press-time, it has been discussed that mats may possibly be covering the many pavement crossings which has been a sore subject for XC purists as the growth of Carollton Schools has stirred the pot enough for a few schools willing to loan the mats they have to cover the pavement. This article will include 2A thru 6A State Previews only. The weather for raceday looks very promising at this time and bodes well for fast times http://www.weather.com/weather/wxdetail3/USGA0096 6A...we have been saving the Best for Last, and here it is from Ga.MileSplit.com, thanks to Pre1962 as expounds his unique and detailed breakdown for the Community....Ga.MileSplit.com and GATFXC would like to thank all the Rankers and Runner of the Week Committee members for the tough, time consuming efforts put forth this season to rank each class along with contributing articles and selections. This often is a thankless endeavor, as the Community is eager to differ on selections. We care about the kids, programs, coaches, fans and parents who support the programs and athletes. Good Luck to everyone in Carrollton and once again congrats to the Class A Winners, Podium teams, All-State individuals and volunteers that made it happen!
