Unsung Heroes is a series that used to be written by Mason Arbery. He did a great job of recognizing athletes who sometimes got buried in results but did a fantastic job of having their best race of the season each week. They didn't win the race, and weren't necessarily the most improved, but just had the best race relative to what they had done to help their team.

So I thought of a way to bring this back for the state meet. Ultimately your performance at the state meet is what matters most. We shouldn't give out awards based on what you do at some random meet in September, for example. It doesn't matter what time you run at a blazing fast course in October either. If you perform well at the state meet, that's all that counts. So I thought this would be a fun way to shine some light on some athletes who were at their best when it really counted. And who may have been passed over in terms of recognition in other areas for one reason or another.
