GHSA 2A State Meet Recap

Girls: Landmark Holds off Fiesty Athens Academy

Well this one came down to the 4x400 as all good track meets do. Landmark and Athens Academy just kept duking it out all weekend long. But at the end of the day the Landmark team was just a little bit stronger and was able to hold off a very talented Athens squad. Landmark was led big time by Moriah Campbell and Malia Campbell. Moriah won the 300m hurdles while placing 2nd in the 100 and 100 hurdles. Meanwhile Malia won the 400 and was 3rd in the 200. They also got huge points from Shari Brown who was 2nd in both the 1600 and 800 while taking 3rd in the 400. Those girls all contributed on relays too where they scored in all four of them. Meanwhile the Athens star was Maya Davis who won all 3 of her distance events and likely scored on a relay as well. Athens also got huge points from Veronika Babbitt who won both of her throwing events. They also put up points in the relays.

Towers finished in 3rd place with big a big performance coming from Layla Adams won the long jump and scored in the 100 while Macada McDonald was 2nd in the 300 hurdles and won the 3rd in the 100 hurdles. Fannin County just barely earned the final trophy thanks mostly to their distance squad that saw Lindsey Holloway and Karli Sams go 3-4 in the 1600 and 2-3 in the 3200 while Ava Acker was 4th in the 800 and they won the 4x800 relay. Other stars in the meet include Madeline Cooper who won the 100 and the 100 hurdles and then came back and got 2nd in the 200. Rhimani Duffie won the 200 and placed 2nd in the 400. Boys:  Athens Academy outlasts Drew Charter in close battle

This one also came down to the 4x400. Athens Academy need to place high enough in the final to overtake Drew Charter for the team win. And they did just enough, by a couple of seconds. Austin McGee did his job for his team but capturing the individual title in the 100 and 200 while Will Deloach scored in 3 events by placing 2nd int he 800 and 1600 after finishing 7th in the 3200. Athens did really well in the 4x400 and the 4x200 as well placing 4th and 2nd in those events respectively. Hoke Lucas also won the pole vault for them. Drew on the other hand was led by Kenyatta Bennett who won the triple jump and high jump while Simeon Adams was runner up in the 100 and 200. They also won the 4x100m relay.
