Day 1 of the2014 Georgia Olympics had some outstanding performances achieved by athletes from all classes. It was definitely 'Hot as Georgia Asphalt' in Jefferson earlier today, confounding climatologists statewide as it seemed weatherwise we all were down in Albany without the gnats, lol. Daniel Haugh from St.Pius X thrilled the fans and his fellow throwers alike winning the 3A Discus with his 1st attempt in 194-5. A few of the highlites ga.milesplit shot pics for are included in this brief article..

St. Pius may be the most overwhelming favorite to repeat as team champs at the Georgia Olympics this week. If you take out all their (3rd/4th) distance runners from the virtual meet I ran its still possible the Golden Lions may ring up 100 points. Cedar Grove is strong in the relays, sprints and Washington County has their share of athletes that can score big points. Henry County, Central, North Hall and Elbert County will be battling for a Podium spot.

The AAA Region Championships 'Athletes of the Week' are Bailey Willett of Blessed Trinity after she ran a smokin' 2:14 in the 800m at 6-AAA, and throws 'Specialist' Daniel Haugh from St.Pius X as he doubled in both events, including unleashing yet another awesome toss of 187-9 in the Discus.

Daniel Haugh of St.Pius X HS has been a monster in the Throws this season, and he once again is selected as the 3A Boys overall 'AOW' after his performances (especially the Discus at 183-2) at the Nike Panther Relays. David Curry of Buford surged into the #2 spot in the 3A PV rankings after he cleared a 14-0 bar at the Gwinnett County Championships making him a co- 'AOW' this past week.
Meet Summary · Mar 30, 2014
Thirty teams rolled onto the Starrs Mill campus Saturday morning and undeterred by the ominous weather forecasts (which 3-4 invitationals cancelled their meets) a very competitive large meet was contested with the powerful AAA St.Pius X boys winning convincingly by 22 points over bunched up Carrollton (2nd) McIntosh (3rd)  The host Lady Panthers defended their turf winning the girls side by a slim 6 point margin over #2 in the 5A team power rankings Pope HS.
