The JV team matters.
The teams who do the best consistently year in and year out are often the ones who have the better JV squads in the state. Winning a trophy at the state meet is a special thing. Winning a state title is even sweeter. But what about winning JV races? They're often not as celebrated as the former, but they're arguably just as important. In cross country, we often live and die by the 5th runner. One of my favorite quotes that describes this sport is "The top runner gets the glory, the 5th runner wins the race." And there's a ton of truth in that, although I've seen it argued that having the best 3rd runner is actually more important than having the best 5th runner. Whose to say? But one thing I am certain of is that having a top notch JV squad is a big sign that you'll be competitive for a trophy or state title next year or the year after. Depth is important in cross country. Having Ethan Ashley is very helpful in your team success this year, but what about next year when he's gone? Others have to step up.
