2020 XC Honors: Augusta All-Area HS Boys Runner of the Year

After a canceled 2020 track season, many didn't know what would be in store for the cross-country season. Thankfully, the season was able to be completed and runners and teams from the Augusta area were able to have great success. The area had two individual state champions and a team champion on both the boys' and girls' sides.

The past two seasons the GHSA 6A Boys State Championship featured local runners earning a third-place finish in 2018 and a runner-up finish in 2019 by former Lakeside runners Mark White and Sam Rich, respectively, getting closer each year to the individual title. Finally, this season Jonathan Greene of Evans became the first area runner to accomplish winning the 6A title. The other individual champion was Hayes Trapp, who led Augusta Prep to their second consecutive GISA AA Championship while winning the individual title. Here's a look at the Augusta All-Area Boys and Girls teams and the runners of the year.

The Mercer signee had a remarkable season he'll never forget that consisted of winning his first cross country region championship and his first state championship. In addition to his region and state victories, he also picked up the win at the Augusta Prep Invitational, battling it out with All-Area members Warren Sheppard and Hayes Trapp. Greene's season-best came at the Alexander/Asics Invitational where he ran 15:35.99. Aside from his three wins, he recorded four top-five finishes, finishing runner-up twice at the Coach Wood Invitational and the Midstate XC Classic. He dominated the 6A Region-3 meet, running 16:34, winning by 42 seconds. Coming into the season, Greene was the highest returner from last year's state championship where he finished sixth. The 6A division had some new schools come in due to reclassification but he was able to overcome some newcomers and win the GHSA 6A state championship after running a 16:36 on the Carrollton course, edging out Rome's Patrick Motes by four seconds.
