Week 2 Ga.MileSplit Cross Country Rankings and ROW

This week's All Class ROWs are Jenna Gearing from White County with the top female performance of the week in the 1A-4A Girls race at Berry.  Kevin Mills of Peachtree Ridge garnered top honors on the Boys side winning the 5A-6A Boys race also at Berry.  Woodward was announced the Boys All-Class #1 slot without having ran this past weekend and the Peachtree Ridge Girls top the chart after their performance at Berry.

Girls 6-A: After waiting a week more than most to start their season, Peachtree Ridge stormed Berry and showed they are a real contender for Carrollton with both a tight pack and a true front runner.  Brookwood hasn't shown their hand yet, but anyone paying attention at Stage Races knows they are loaded and that Gwinnett County will be quite a meet.  Etowah looks the next strongest, leading 5 teams from region 5 in the top 10.  Harrison's tight pack will give many teams fits this season.  Covered Bridge will be the most compelling meet for the 6A girls rankings next weekend.

Boys 6-A: Peachtree Ridge boys showed the same plan as their girls by winning individually with Mills and having a close pack to just miss the team title at Berry.  Mill Creek is not far behind and with another deep Brookwood team, Gwinnett County could be a toss-up.  Etowah showed their stuff at NEGA and will be tough team to beat at any large invitational with just over a 30 second spread from 1 to 5.  Harrison also showed their pack running ability to lead the Cobb contingents over the first couple of weekends.  We should know more about Etowah and Roswell after Covered Bridge this weekend.

Girls 3A - It’s shaping up to be an exciting year in AAA girls!  Blessed Trinity and St. Pius return for another year at the top of the state rankings.  Both have already won major invitationals and leave us longing for a head to head matchup down the road.  St. Pius still owns the title of state champion until somebody takes it away from them, but early results show Blessed Trinity with a slight edge for the #1 spot.  2013 was the first race on the Fox Hole Early Bird so course conversions are tough, but Blessed Trinity’s #2-#4 runners seemed to have come out of the gate slightly ahead of Pius with 2 months of season to go.  We saw Pius take over those spots when it counted last year so the drama will be there until the gun goes off on November 9th.  Solomon, Gandolfo, Willett, McConell, Marchuk, Morse.  Crawford, Entrekin, Vocelka, Lipscomb, Pyden, Braxton, Glenn.  The depth here is phenomenal.

White County is led by super sophomore Jenna Gearing (impressive 18:45 winner in the heat of Berry’s late race) and returns all 7 Varsity girls from last year’s 3rd place podium squad.  White won at West Hall and took 4th at A-4A Berry this week.  White looks very close with North Oconee (5th at NEGA, 4th at UGA), who also returns its nucleus from 2012 and starts the season at #4 in the state.  Woodward rounds out the top 5 in AAA with a 22:25 team average at Early Bird.  These 5 teams look to have an edge on the rest and could be the ones fighting for this year’s 4 podium spots.

The bottom half of the AAA rankings has a lot of question marks that are sure to be answered in the coming weeks.  There is currently very little difference between #6 and #10, leaving state spots up for grabs.    Ranking Buford – North Hall – Jackson County was helped by their head to head to head matchup at NEGA.  Chapel Hill’s 23:00 team average at Early Bird and Decatur’s strong showing at Mercy Invite land these teams in the top 10 for week 1.

3A Boys have had an argument for toughest classification in Georgia for years now and 2013 will be no different.  The St. Pius boys took on 5A/6A at Berry and grabbed the win over Peachtree Ridge and Mill Creek.  How can you pull off a feat like that and not be ranked #1 in AAA?  Woodward showed off its summer madness with a 16:30 average Early Bird, sporting the state’s fastest 5th man (Ben Murray, 16:48).  State title favorites Austin Sprague (Pius) and Drew Sands (Woodward) will be the show to watch, but the hunt for the biggest trophy in the state will have to be sorted out in the pack.  North Hall’s boys come in at #3 after a dominating win over the A-4A boys at Berry, boasting a 17:02 average in the hottest race of the day.  North Hall comes off of a big summer and will look to peak late as usual to try and close the gap to Pius and Woodward.  North Oconee (4th at NEGA, 2nd at UGA) is our #4 ranked team, getting 4 guys in under 17:30 at NEGA.  Throw Blessed Trinity in the mix and it looks like it could be a 5 team race for these 4 podium spots.

Oconee (18:11 at NEGA) comes in at #6 with a nice :45 split from the #1 man to the #5 man.  As with the ladies, the bottom half of AAA boys starts like this, but should shake up from week to week as teams progress this fall.  Chapel Hill (#7) blazed an 18:21 team avg at Early Bird.  Buford (#8) went 19:03 at NEGA and could climb the list with an improved #5 as the season progresses.  Savannah Arts (#9) took 4th place at Fleet Feet.  White County (#10) took first at West Hall and 7th at A-4A Berry.
