The Westlake Cam Newton Relays Preview


The Westlake "Cam Newton" Relays is set to kick off @ 9am Saturday morning.  The meet will be sponsored by Westlake Alum, Heisman Trophy winner, & NFL MVP Cam Newton & the Cam Newton Foundation.  The meet will be contesting the Deshon Lawrence 400 hurdles giving kids an opportunity to establish a time in an event that college recruiters want to see. The meet will have 5 teams from out of state and 25 plus teams from Georgia.  In addition, there will be Westlake "Cam Newton" Relays T shirts & medals given to the overall 1st place finishers.



Boys Preview

The Boys sprint races will be led by 2015 New Balance Outdoor Runner Up Nathaniel Huggins (Opelika High, Alabama) who ran 10.38 last year & Karon Delince  (Central - Phenix City, Alabama) who has run 10.60.  The race of the day will be the Deshon Lawrence 400 hurdles where there will be 4 hurdlers who all have ran under 39 seconds which include Westlake's Rainey Anderson, Stephenson's Denzel Harper, Langston Tre Williams, & Westlake's Tyrique Davis.  We may see a hurdler run 53 seconds in the 400 hurdles. The 4x1 & 4x4 Relays have Westlake (41.2 & 3:17) Stephenson (41.2) & Fayette County (3:22) leading with the top times.  The boy's long jump has 4 long jumpers that have jumped over 23 ft. Stephenson's Denzel Harper (23-11) Hillgrove's Jerimiah (23-9), Westlake's Cameron Murray (23-8), and Central's-Phenix City Karon Delince (23-2).


Girls Preview

The girl's relay races are led by McEachern and Westlake who have the top relay times coming in.  The girls 100 meter will be led by Frederick Douglas Halimah Barlow who has ran 11.95.  The girl's long jump has a loaded field with 3 long jumpers that have jumped over 18ft which are Stephenson's Simone Harper (18-2), Mays Chloe Robinson (18-1) and her teammate Sydni Gilmore (18-0).  In addition, the Deshon Lawrence 400 hurdles will have 2 great 300 meter hurdlers running the 400 hurdles which are Westlake's Kennedy Simon & Langston's Hughes Mia Lewis who are capable of going under 60 seconds. The Pole Vault is led by State favorite from the Weber School Becky Arbiv who has jumped 13-3 along with her teammate Ariel Arbiv.
