Ga.MileSplit MS Challenge was once again a great meet under the lights at North Oconee this past Friday. Over 400 athletes competed including individual entrants. Athens Christian's Girls took the team title over Elbert Co. MS and the Rams from Elbert easily won the Boys team title.
St.Pius X successfully defended their title scoring 97 points literally 'outdistancing' the Field without winning an event Saturday though Joseph Ferrugia added a silver in the 800m and their 4x400m squad seized a bronze. Coach McClay commented that the Golden Lions this season were blessed with talent and a special group of young men to coach. Cedar Grove had a profitable finals jetting into the runnerup team spot with 59 points and closed their meet by taking Gold in the 4x400m. Speedy Washington County and Elbert County tied for 3rd with 39 each. Quintaveon Poole's double sailing to a 47.30 in the 400m and 21.62 in the 200 was the big highlight in 3A, along with Harper Sigler's bold run in the 800m diving across the line seizing the Gold.
St. Pius may be the most overwhelming favorite to repeat as team champs at the Georgia Olympics this week. If you take out all their (3rd/4th) distance runners from the virtual meet I ran its still possible the Golden Lions may ring up 100 points. Cedar Grove is strong in the relays, sprints and Washington County has their share of athletes that can score big points. Henry County, Central, North Hall and Elbert County will be battling for a Podium spot.
St.Pius X boys will be hard to beat easily qualifying all their top scorers for the Ga Olympics..its possible they could sweep the distance events, throws and horizontals making it a race for the next 3 team positions. On the girls side of 'A' sectionals, Pius did well with the girls who survived Region. Blessed Trinity and Maynard Jackson also had successful outings and will be on the "old scoreboards' down in Albany come Saturday. Out of Sectional 'B' at East Jackson, Franklin County, Buford and Johnson Savannah will bring some speed down to Albany. White County, North Hall, Hart County and North Oconee dominated the distance races and should be a factor. North OC's girls also q'd their top Field athletes into state, including Mary Terry who cleared 5-8 in the HJ and could score well in the Hurdles. For the boys, North Hall and North OC jousted in all the distance events and will be chasing the Pius X guys next weekend. The heat on the Track in Jefferson will come from Elbert County, Buford and Washington County. Can WACO's Q'Poole go sub 47 in the 400m? Preston Smith from SE Bulloch will be gunning to triple in the Jumps.
St.Pius X Boys loaded up in Region 6 qualifying their top potential State scorers for Sectionals. Cedar Grove brought the speed in 6. Elbert County has speed and hops coming out of 8 and don't discount Washington County as they cruised in Region 3. Henry County and Peach County will be taking alot of athletes to Sectionals as well as Chapel Hill.
As the regular season approaches the midway point, 3A boys is becoming very competitive once again. The 3A Boys Outdoor overall 'AOW' goes to Marquice Dye from Elbert County. At the Jefferson Relays he turned in the top 100m and 110 hudles performances of the season for 3A at 10.85 and 14.55...
