Senior spotlight is an attempt to let athletes tell as much of their own story as we can. We want to take a look into some of the things that make them tick. If you are a senior who is in the top 25 this fall and want to be featured, send an email to milesplitga@gmail.com
Here we've got Walker Elrod from Grace Christian for a senior spotlight moment:
What is your PR in XC so far?
15:13
What are your college plans, if you have them figured out?
Not yet decided, will be running division 1 Xc and track for sure though.
What's your most memorable race or race you're most proud of?
Breaking 10 minutes in the 3200 for the first time as a freshman at Stars mills Friday night lights. My coach drove me up that day and it was a very special moment that I got to spend with her.
What is your favorite meet in cross country season and why?
I am a big fan of the ASICS invite because I am normally able to run fast there and the conditions are always very good. I was just able to set my new PR there.
What has been your biggest challenge in high school or what has been the hardest obstacle to overcome?
The hardest challenge that I have had to overcome is training alone. 90% of all my runs are done solo from recovery days to track workouts and long tempos. I have tried to overcome it by driving to run with friends but must of the time its just me out there.
What is your daily/weekly mileage like?
Around 55 miles a week. Lower for races, closer to 45.
What do you think is the biggest part of training that has helped you achieve success?
Showing up every day and trusting the process. One workout or long run doesn't make you better, but the sum of them do.
What is your all time favorite workout?
I really love pre-season tempo mile repeats. Running 3 or 4 miles under 5 min mile pace just is super fun and is a huge confidence booster.
What is your least favorite or hardest workout?
I am not a fan of long tempo runs. I don't like because they are hard but I know they make me stronger.
Who do you have to thank for your success?
My mom plays the largest role in my success. She is always there for me. Me running fast makes my mama smile and I love to see my mama smile. Also my Coach pushes me to be the best I can be.
Who do you look up to the most in your event?
The people I look up to the most in my life in one of my mentors Max Hardin. We talk almost daily and he tells me how not only I can be a better runner, but also a better human and get closer to God. He runs at Auburn University and is a sub 4 miler. He is a great example and I strive to be like him.
What gets you pumped up for a workout or race?
I actually try to not get pumped before races. I saw a YouTube video one day that says chilling out before races can lead to better results. I try to just ease into my day before the race and go through my drills in a simple state of mind. I believe doing this lowers my heart rate which therefore I can go to the line more relaxed and ready to perform.
What is your favorite food and/or movie and/or TV show and/or song?
My favorite food is hibachi. I get this after most of my meets. I love to watch the show Suits and listen to anything by Drake.
What will you miss the most about high school?
The thing that I will miss the most about high school is my grandparents and Mom. I see them every day and they have shaped my life in so many ways. I will defiantly miss not seeing them every day.
What advice would you give your younger self?
I would tell myself to focus on the little things sooner. Every one is doing the workouts and the mileage. The little things like bands, core, liftings and eating right are what will bring you to the top.
