RIVERWOOD'S BRET MCDANIEL SIGNS WITH WAKE FOREST

(Feb 3, 2010) Bret McDaniel, Riverwood International Charter School’s storied cross-country and distance track runner, signed a scholarship to Wake Forest University on February 3, 2010.  She will compete for the Demon Deacons in cross-country and middle distance during the track season.  Bret is a three time AAA State Champion (X-Country, 1600 meters and 3200 meters); she is a three time Fulton County Cross-Country Champion and current course record holder with a time of 18:57; she also holds three Riverwood distance records - cross-country (17:48) 1600 meters (5:00.81) and 3200 meters (10:59.39).  Bret achieved All State and All Metro honors in each of her four years in cross-country and All State and All Metro for the 1600 and 3200 last season in track.

“Bret was recruited by so many major colleges, and she found just the right fit,” says Isaac Seals, Bret’s cross country and track coach at Riverwood. “She should be really happy at Wake.  She is so very coachable and runs with a “no excuses” attitude, even if she’s sick or hurt.  We will really miss her leadership and great talent.”

Not only is Bret a standout runner, but she is also a State ranked swimmer on Riverwood's swim team.  As a sophomore she qualified and competed in the State Finals for three relays, and during the last two swim seasons she secured State Qualifying times and competed in the State Meet in three individual events, 100 back, 200 free and 100 free, as well as two relays.

Academically, Bret is a Candidate for the very demanding International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.  She is a member of the National Honor Society, and recipient of Riverwood's Scholar Tri-Athlete Award.  Bret also a leader for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and a volunteer for Genesis Shelter and Trinity Community Ministries. Bret is the daughter of Becky and Charlie McDaniel of Atlanta.
