Well, it wasn't quite the Oprah PR give away it usually is. Normally Asics is basically "You get a PR! You get a PR! Everybody gets a PR!!!" which makes a coach's job very easy. But the course still ran fast enough that if you worked for it, you could get yourself a PR. That's what happens when there's only one hill on the course and it just serves as your signal to start your kick anyway. Asics was still plenty fast, even with Humid conditions and a sloppy first mile meaning that it wasn't optimal conditions for blazing fast races. The soft surface saps your energy as the race goes on making it tough to run as fast as you may have expected. Such is XC racing. Times don't always come your way, but you can still learn from it and move on. And to those that powered through and still got themselves a PR? You killed it and should be very proud of your race. Faster times are coming your way, stick with it and you'll see!
In out of state action, it looks like they stayed a little bit cleaner and had harder surfaces with more energy return. Most athletes headed to North Carolina and Alabama for their faster out of state courses. And while those courses are fast, they're not typically as fast as Asics. This year though? We might have had the most even running courses ever in a weekend. Throw in a faster Westover course as well, and things were basically a wash. Everybody who raced this weekend did it on roughly the same course in terms of speed. So you can compare times better than you normally can, which is kind of fun. Asics was still probably slightly faster than Great American and Wendy's, but not by much. Maybe 5-7 seconds by my estimate. Jesse Owens was basically on par with Asics this year, or maybe just a touch faster? Hard to know exactly, and if we had the message boards still I'm sure we would have spent the weekend debating it like the good old days. But for now, I'll just go with this rough estimate in my analysis moving forward.
No matter what you think of any of the big meets from the weekend, you got to at least admit things were fun all around. And good racing was seen by all. The thrilling finishes up front at Asics were certainly very entertaining. I can't wait for state in just over a month!
