Will Woodward Girls repeat as team champions this year in class 6A?
The track and field season is officially underway and most teams will debut their full varsity squads either this upcoming weekend or the next. So far it's just mostly been time trials as we all get back in the swing of things. Some of Georgia's top athletes have gone to indoor meets and have posted some impressive results, but indoor is not for everybody. The action will definitely pick up very soon and plenty of stories will start developing as we get more and more meets throughout the season. Track is definitely back and it's about to get crazy in a couple of weeks. But before the chaos, it's important to know what we're looking towards. Ultimately, the biggest accomplishment in our sport is winning a state title. But it's often even sweeter when you can win a team title. So knowing that, I thought it would be fun to take a look at what the virtual meets say will happen in the team battles this year.
These team scores were calculated based on last year's performances from returners only. Keep in mind that the virtual meets can't account for everything. Relay performances are not accounted for as we don't know who graduated kids from the relays and who didn't. But if a team has a big point total in sprints, it's a good bet they'll add some relay points as well. It also doesn't account for kids who have transferred or decided not to do the sport anymore for whatever reason. Those things will be reflected on MileSplit soon and accounted for in the 2024 rankings and virtual meets once they appear in results. But overall, these virtual meets give us a picture of who could be a contender for a team title this season. I've also linked the individual returner rankings for each classification in case you missed our series on that. So check them out!
