2021 GHSA A- Public State Championship Preview

Watch the LIVE-STREAM from ALL Meets:

A Public Boys

A-Public was created by the GHSA back in 2012 when the rural school's found it increasingly difficult to stay competitive with the small private schools in metro Atlanta and surrounding areas that could draw student-athletes from other counties, etc. The GHSA saw it the same way, and class A was split into 2 classes. A Public is actually a huge class, with 83 member schools stretching to remote every corner of the state.

Commerce HS, who regularly competes against larger northeast Georgia schools and has been the benefactor of some quality coaching, has enjoyed a lot of success in Track. The Tigers have won 3 state titles since 2013 (would have 4 if not for COVID-19) and are primed to run away from the field down in Albany this weekend. They are balanced and very deep in distance, sprints, hurdles, field events, and relays. They may well have the best A-Public track team in the short history of the class. 2020 XC champ Brandon Martin tripled at the Area meet and will be aiming to repeat that this weekend.

Coach Suttles has done a great job down in Montgomery County in the vast metropolis of Mount Vernon winning a state title in 2018 and remaining competitive. They are powered by sprints, hurdles, and relays and a near-lock-to-be team runner-up this weekend. Four schools battling for team Podium spots will be Schley County, Washington-Wilkes, Greene County, and Drew Charter. Xavier Brantley will lead the charge as he will attempt a triple in the hurdles and high jump.

A Public Girls

This meet is going to feature 2 squads that are as different as they are far away from each other in Georgia. A traditionally strong field events program in Gordon Lee HS (NW Georgia) that has won two state titles since 2013 vs a rural southeast Georgia squad from Montgomery County. As usual, Gordon Lee is going to pour it on out on the field, but also have a strong hurdler/high jumper and a distance runner. Montgomery's girls mirror their boy's strengths powered by sprints, hurdles, relays, but also jumps. If Gordon Lee has a letdown in the field, this could come down to the 4x400 relay in which Montgomery has a big advantage. Armuchee, Greene County, Schley County, and Georgia Military Prep will be aiming to get on the team Podium.
