Meet of the Week: 2020 Kona Ice Trinity XC Fall Classic

The 2nd Annual Kona Ice Trinity Fall Classic will be the 'featured race' of week seven this season. Last Fall the inaugural meet was contested on the campus of Trinity Christian-Sharpsburg in Coweta County. This season the meet has found a new home at the 'One Church' Christian church (formerly Heritage Christian Church) just south of Peachtree City on Redwine Road.

Coach Weaver talks about the meet and his XC program, "I serve as the director of track and field at Trinity, and founded our program back in 2012. We entered the GHSA in the 2018-2019 school year. I serve as the Meet Director for our XC home meets, which I launched the plan to take a big step last year to host our first annual event. We hosted the 1st annual Kona Ice Trinity XC Fall Classic the final weekend in September. It's our goal to offer a great race about a month before the region meets, which is also serving as a preview region event for many schools that will come back in October to the same location. We also served as the 2019 GHSA Private-A, Area 3 meet last October at OneChurch (formerly Heritage Christian Church). We went from never hosting an XC event, to hosting two last Fall, this will be our 3rd event."

Last season the Kona Ice Trinity Fall Classic had eight high schools and four middle schools that competed. But, the 2020 meeting has almost tripled in size and there is a really strong line up of schools attending, including a geat representation coming from A Private, along with Lovett out of AA and large school Starr's Mill.

The course is one of the most immaculate in the state. Many post-season 'Meet of Champions' races have been contested here, along with dozens of region championships, as well as AT&T Starr's Mill Panther the first Saturday of every September. The layout consists of mostly smaller rolling hills, is nearly entirely grass with a sprinkling of wood chips, having a large fairway like start, three loops around the lake, and a challenging, but exciting uphill finish. When conditions are optimal the course runs fast, when rain-soaked its much slower. Razorback Jacob McLeod (Arkansas) is the HS boys course record holder at 15:02 (2018). Elizabeth Funderburk (FSU) owns the girls' record at 17:38 (2017).
