Class 4A

Boys

Jaylen Slade of Chapel Hill 10.22 says it all..

4A Boys

There are 2 very strong teams on the Boys side of 4A including defending Champ St. Pius X and now supercharged Chapel Hill. Pius is loaded in the throws, hurdlesand relays. Chapel Hill features the top freshman sprinter in the USA with Jaylen Slade (10.22- 100m), relays, horizontal jumps and long sprints. On paper Sandy Creek and Mary Persons are team Podium contenders.

Sprints

100m- How low can he go? Jaylen Slade of Chapel Hill is a beast having an amazing pr of 10.22 setting him up as #1 frosh on MileSplit USA. JaTravious Stewart of Cross Creek, Quen Wilson of Mary Persons and Keyvonte Nelson of Americus-Sumter will be tight crossing the line.

200m- Slade is #3 among freshman in the USA at 21.35 Chasing could be Robert Jared Williams of St. Pius and Mike Wright of Woodward.

400m- This could be a terrific race with AJ Hale of Sandy Creek having a pr of 47.78, Williams of St. Pius at 47.88 and Shawn Langley of Chapel Hill 48.02

Distance

800m- Jonathan Myrthil will be defending his 2018 title and has a pr of 1:52.50 @ Meet of Champions. Wesley John from Oconee County, James Mancini of Blessed Trinity and Shawn Langley of Chapel Hill will seek to make it a race.

1600m- It looks like a ptential duel in the 1600 between soph Justin Wachtel at 4:16 and Johnof Oconee at 4:17 Do not count out Leif Andersen from Marist though.. Jack Voss and Rowan Wiley of St. Pius are racing for big team points.

3200m- Look for Wachtel of Mary Persons (9:27) and Andersen of Marist to duke it out here like they did at 2018 XC State.

Hurdles

110h- Should be quite a race here with team points at stake for Matthew Harris of St. Pius (14.25) and Omarian Clemons from Sandy Creek at 14.30 Myles McCoy of Westover and Tony Mathis from Cedartown could move up with a mistake.

300h- Harris of St. Pius has the edge with a pr of 37.23. Aj Hale of Sandy Creek at 37.60 has the best chance to beat him. McCoy of Westover could make it tight.

Relays

4x100- Huge race to start Finals on Saturday between top team contenders Chapel Hill (41.10) and St. Pius (41.87) Shaw, Mary Persons and Cross Creek will try to run them down.

4x400- Great race on tap to close out the 4A meet and this event could determine the Champ. Chapel Hill has went 3:18.81, Sandy Creek (3:19.33) and St. Pius (3:20.98) Eastside had the fastest time at Sectionals going 3:19.91

Field Events

HJ- Sultan Simms of Woodward recently cleared 6-10 and is the clear favorite for Gold in the HJ. Silas Griffin of NW Whitfield went 6-4 at Sectionals 6 others have sb of 6-2

LJ- Yet another key event for team points with Chapel Hill's Freddie Allen III having a best mark of 23-9.50 and Matthew Harris of St. Pius at 23-8.25 Quinton Reese of Blessed Trinity went 23-1.75 at Sectionals.

TJ- It could be the right time for Jaylen Slade of Chapel Hill to bust out a big jump. He comes in with the top mark at 47-6 Ian Rome of Columbus HS was tops at Sectional with a mark of 45-4

PV- Sectionals was q'fest for the vaulters. Not the strongest event in 4A boys this could be a battle of attrition. Nick Bebko of Cartersville has the top bar this season at 13-7 Four other vaulters have seasn bests of 13-0

Discus- Tanner Duffin has a great opportunity to overtake the #1 spot All-Time in GA having a recent pr of 201-2 Kyle Poole from North Oconee is #4 all-classes with a bomb of 175-2 Logan Montgomery of Ridgeland threw 160-0 at Sectionals.

Shot- Duffin (nationally ranked) has dominated all-classes in the Shot having a pr at a non prep event of 70-2.50 and a chance to take over #1 All-Time. It will be a great competition for runnerup with 4 throwers having marks of 50+ led by Poole of North Oconee

4A Girls

Gabriella Grissom of Sandy Creek

Chapel Hill will be gunning for a 3rd consecutive 4A Girls team title. They are strong in the relays, throws, 'long sprints' and PV. Sandy Creek has the best chance to upend them with 'long sprints' jumps, relays and 300h. Other squads pushing for the team Podium are Marist, Westover, St. Pius and Woodward.

Sprints

100m- Talaya Lewis of Richmond Academy has the top pr in this event at 11.79 Kayla Sweeney of Howard is at 11.92, Ashanti Tigner of Troup County and Aaliyah James of West Hall both have went sub :12

200m- Lewis of Richmond Academy could double being the fastest in the 200 as well at 24.78 James of West Hall and Sweeney of Howard will seek to break up the sweep. Unfortunately, Sheleah Harris of North Oconee got injured? and would have been a factor in both events.

400m- 2 girls have went sub :57 in the 400 this season including rankings leader Gabriella Grissom at 56.52 and Ilene Soleyn of Chapel Hill.

Distance

800m- Gabriella Grissom of Sandy Creek comes in with the top pr in the 800 at 2:16.52 Shamia Jones of Westover should be a factor and Ilene Soleyn of Chapel Hill will be pressing for team points. Its my understanding. Morgan Engels of North Oconee and Caroline McArthur of Oconee should be near the front.

1600m- The fastest runner in this event, Maggie Yankovich of St. Pius has a pr of 5:00.99, but cruised to a pedestrian 5:40 at Sectionals. The race could be wide open between her and Hannah Miniutti of Blessed Trinity, Kathleen Maley and Emily Little of Marist.

3200m- Yankovich of St. Pius has the top pr in 4A at 10:56. Expect Kathleen Schellman of Marist, Miniutti of Blessed Trinity, Phoebe Brodrick of Oconee and Kathleen Maley of Marist to contend.

Hurdles

100h- Chastity Pickett of Westover is primed to sweep the hurdles events. She has a pr of 14.38 Other top athletes are Ny'Ajah Hardy from Cairo HS and Abigail Turnbull of Chapel Hill.

300h- Pickett will be tough to beat in the 300h as well having a top time of 43.50 Racing for 2nd and hoping for a miscue are Jania Hodges of Sandy Creek, Savannah Simms of Woodward and Trinaty Coney of Howard.

Relays

4x100- Big race for Chapel Hill (47.63) and Sandy Creek (48.07) GW Carver out of Columbus is a threat at 48.08 along w/ Baldwin at 48.13

4x400- The 4x400 may determine the team champ once again with Chapel Hill the fastest 4A squad this season at 3:55 followed by Sandy Creek's 3:57 Westover, Woodward and Marist will contend.

Field Events

HJ- 2 ladies have bars of 5-7 this Spring including Jania Hodges of Sandy Creek and Mollie Speights from Baldwin. HJ can be a hit or miss event, so don't count out Jada Blanton of Luella and Kianni Westbrook of Burke County.

LJ- 3 girls have marks of 18+ in the LJ in 2019. Sadrea Mabry of GW Carver (18-6.75) Jania Hodges of Sandy Creek and Jada Grant from Lagrange.

TJ- Grant from Lagrange has the top mark coming into the State meet with a sweet 40-3 bound, looking to surpass her could be Qua'Neshia Hamilton from Burke County, and Karen Kirunda of Marist.

PV- Journey Gurley of Madison County has cleared 12-6 at Oconee County tri. Malahne Walker of Chapel Hill may be the only vaulter with a shot to beat her at 11-2

Discus- This event is wide open between Nakalaya Burrell of North Clayton, Egypt Jackson of Woodward. London Shaw from Cartersville, Haylee Terry of SW Whitfield and Kassidy Amerson-Fox will try to sling one past them.

Shot- Big points at stake for Chapel Hill with top ranked Kassidy Amerson-Fox (40-9.50) Hoping to supplant her will be Jana Barden of Blessed Trinity, Shania Riles of GW Carver and Shaw from Cartersville.
