7th Annual Atlanta Games will be Fast & Furious

The 7th Annual Atlanta Games will be off and running Saturday morning at Lakewood Stadium. 30 schools are registered including Westlake, Campbell, Heritage, defending 3A boys champ Cedar Grove, East Coweta, Grady, Maynard Jackson, North Springs, SW DeKalb and Union Grove. MileSplit GA will be onsite shooting all the race action.

Keys to the Meet:

  • The Sprints

100 meters:
The events that always bring the crowd to its feet should wow the crowd with at least nine entrants in the boys race with sub 11-second times this season, led by Arabia Mountain's Jordan Barrow (10.80), MLK's Jhivon Wilson (10.84) and Maynard Jackson's Nathan Price (10.88).

The girls race has nine entrants with season times or PRs of 12.47 or faster with four contenders under 12 seconds: Kayla Hunt, MLK (11.85), Trinity Flagler, Westlake (11.88), Kennedy Price (11.89) and Queen Couch, Maynard Jackson (11.94).

200 meters
The boys 200 could produce some sub 22.00 times as five athletes enter with times of 22.33 or faster this season and three with PRs below 22.00: MLK's Wilson (21.64), Southwest DeKalb's Devin Brewington (21.73) and Arabia Mountain's Barrow (21.76).

The girls deuce has five athletes with sub 25.0 entry times and is shaping up as a marquee event: MLK's Hunt (24.29) and teammate Lauren Euler (24.46), Westlake's Imari Johnson (24.70), Southwest DeKalb's Raven Thurman (24.80), and Dutchtown teammates Chelsea Tate (24.80) and Nyah Snyder (24.96).

400 meters
Three contestants in the boys quarter have broken 50.00 this season, including: Miller Grove's Chuck Shawn Collins (49.82), Rockdale County's Justin Steele (49.98) and Tucker's Jonovan Lowe (49.59). Dutchtown's Ja'Shaun Poke, last year's winner, has a PR of 47.69.

Maynard Jackson's Niya Benton-Andrews leads girls entrants with a seed time of 55.05 and should be pushed by MLK's Hunt (55.39), Southwest DeKalb's Thurman (56.08) and Stockbridge's Jaydan Bryant (57.40).

The Relays
Having produced the state's All-Time state record in the boys 4x100, Southwest DeKalb's 40.49 in 2016, speed once again will be the order of the day as some of the state's fastest quartets face off for early-season bragging rights.

4x100
Leading the way are the Bears of Griffin, who a week ago, posted the state's second-fastest 2019 time of 42.07 at its own Erwin Ross Invitational. Formidable challengers include: Southwest DeKalb, Dutchtown, Lithonia, East Coweta, Rockdale County, Arabia Mountain and Westlake.

Westlake leads a trio of sub 48 times this season. The Lady Lions enter with the meet's top time of 47.10, narrowly ahead of MLK (47.56). Others in the hunt include: Southwest DeKalb, Maynard Jackson, South Atlanta and Newton.

4x400
With four of the Top 10 fastest marks All-Time in the state, including the state record of 3:11.31 in 1987, there should be little surprise to any long-time track observer that Southwest DeKalb would be at the front of the pack of 4x400 entrants.

The Panthers enter with the state's second fastest time this year of 3:18.39. Strong challengers include: Miller Grove, Dutchtown, Westlake, Lithonia, Pebblebrook and Arabia Mountain.

Westlake, which has posted a 3:54.70 this season, appears to be the favorite in the girls race, but could face challenges from Southwest DeKalb, Maynard Jackson, Arabia Mountain and Newton.

Boys Team-  East Coweta is one of the top boys teams powered by their distance squad led by Kyle Harkabus. Look for Westlake and Union Grove to throw alot of points on the board and be in the mix for a team award as well as Heritage or Rockdale County,
