Girls
After a mid-season foot injury that severely curtailed her training, Allison Bishop of Woodland High School appears to be rounding back into the form that won last year’s region championship and earned her All-State honors. She will be challenged by Jenna Wesley of Spalding and Weezie Chandler and Haley Smith of Woodward.
The Woodward girls are the strong favorites to win the girl’s team championship. Spalding, Eagle’s Landing and a rapidly improving Mary Persons group will try to upset them and should round out the top 4 in some order.
Boys
The boy’s individual title should be a great race between two or three runners. Nathen Vassey followed up a great freshman track season with some strong performances this cross country season. Will Ficklen is coming off a strong Last Chance race and should be in top form to challenge Vassey. The wild card is Joe Cromer. After breaking his arm this past weekend will he even race at region? If he does, will he run well? It looks like it will be a race time decision. Both Andrew Lauer of Woodward and Zack Sims of Eagle’s Landing have run well this season and will be out to push the leaders.
With Cromer’s status for the boy’s race questionable it throws the team title up in the air. Spalding is talented but has yet to put together a complete race. Will region be that race? With two front runners, Woodward will be tough as well. Can the other Eagle’s Landing runners make up for Cromer’s absence if he does not race?
