Marietta Boys Lethal, Poteet Wins Boys Title, Darlington Girls Bring It, Assinzo Wins Girls Overall
Marietta Varsity runners hustle to the finish line staying undefeated this Fall
MMMM…Marietta! The Varsity Boys race was obvious domination by 6A/All Classes powerhouse Marietta scoring a mere 23 points. From the start, the boys in striped shorts were out front establishing their top 7 runners in the front of the lead pack, all chasing Logan Poteet from Kell who went on to win in 16:03. The focus on their faces and the proximity of so many from one team as they pursued Poteet made one wonder if they would indeed catch their prey. Marrietta had 6 in the top 10 with Khayvon Benson 2nd in 16:10, Jack Henderson at 16:19, Carlos Torres 16:20.02, Colton Atkinson 16:20.76, David Savic placing 9th in 16:37 and Hayden Tullos 10th in 16:37. Splitting up Marietta's tight pack was Darlington’s Spencer Fields who gave the home folks a charge placing 6th 16:21, Cherokee’s Taylor Scarborough 7th 16:22, and Creekview’s Brennan Garriques was 8th (16:25). Cherokee HS ran well as a team placing 2nd with 125 points followed by Creekview (137), Kennesaw Mtn (147) and Hillgrove 201. Top 10 ranked 6A Mill Creek and Etowah both sat their studs opting to give JV runners some Varsity competition. .

Marietta’s Mary Jeanne Assinzo (pictured above) got off to a great start running up front the entire race and coasted uncontested to the Overall victory in 19:13. Behind her was a gut match finish between her teammate Rebecca Dow and Darlington’s Stephanie Ward as both started their finishing kick with 300 meters to go. Ward got the edge in 19:32 while Dow finished in 19:35. Keely Sheehan of Dunwoody crossed in 19:58. A group of runners finished within seconds of each other to round out the top 10 including Daniela Rodriquez of Dacula in 20:04, Olivia Terwilliger of Kell in 20:05, Jordan Zimmerman of Wesleyan in 20:09, Marielle Lewis of Kell in 20:13, Lauren Wallin of Creekview in 20:15 and Caitlyn Farrell of Cherokee in 20:17.
Darlington's Stephanie Ward places 2nd Overall leading the hungry Tiger Gals to the Team title
The team victory went to host team 2A Darlington with 83 points thanks to placing 4 of their scorers in the top 20 (spanking #3 Wesleyan) Creekview finished second overall with their 122 points just nudging past 5A rival Dunwoody’s 126. Marietta finished 4th and Wesleyan 5th. Expected to be a contender, Etowah did not run their top girls. (cmon' Newbee, what gives?)
An unusual site to see a team’s number one runner in the JV race, but regardless, Rome’s Daniel Glick established a commanding lead in the first mile and finished first in 17:03. Marietta took the 2nd and 3rd spot with Jordan Person in 17:49 and John Fitzgerald in 18:27. Mill Creek proved dominated the JV race with 56 points besting Kennesaw Mountain’s 61 and Marietta’s 82.
The Girls JV started the day off with a great matchup between Wesleyan and Creekview. Both teams scored 38 with Wesleyan placing their 6th runner just 5 spots ahead of Creekview’s. Dunwoody finished in third with 87 points and Darlington in 4th. Lauren Maresca from Walker won individually with a 21:41 followed by Darlington’s Kate Flory in 22:08.
