Northview Girls/Milton Boys Show Early Season Strength at Covered Bridge
Varsity Girls
Emma Grace Hurley lived up to the early season promise of being the top female runner in the state as she and Northview superstar Lindsay Billings battled head to head for most of the course before Hurley pulled ahead to stay in the last 800 meters beating Lindsay by 6 seconds. On a day when most of the times were off, these two girls flew over the course, both shattering the old record of 8:40 held by Brooke Koblitz. In team scoring the Northview girls posted an impressive score of only 40 points, while besting a well-packed Milton squad. The Milton girls’ also showed they will be a force to consider this season with their strong finish beating perennial power Brookwood by more than 60 points. Fourth place Blessed Trinity also will be in the mix for the 3A title based on their girls’ fine race Saturday.
Varsity Boys
While Miles Yap of Brookwood was cruising to a 30+ second win over tough Jack Bluth of Milton, the rest of Milton’s team outscored Brookwood in a very tight battle with both teams having 10 of the top 15 runners between them. In the end, Milton held the edge by just 7 points, and they showed they are ready to contend at the highest level this year. Milton’s 2/3 punch of Bluth and Cole plus a fine performance by freshman Sam Bowers proved to be the difference in the race. Among the other top teams, Blessed Trinity’s third place finish among all the 6A schools indicates they too will be a top team in the state, especially in 3A.
