Westlake Relays Preview
Westlake Relays is set to start Saturday @ 9am. There will be plenty of competition not only from GA schools but also from other schools out of state.
Girls
Sprints: Westlake’s Shekera Martin (11.7) looks to battle it out with Tee'asiah Vance from J.L Mann High School in South Carolina.
Relays: Westlake’s 4x1 looks to improve on their U.S.#3 time of 46.05, but they will be challenged by their other Fulton County partner North Springs and South Carolina’s J.L. Mann & Spartanburg
4x4: Westlake has the leading time in this event with a U.S. #3 time of 3:47; however South Carolina’s J.L. Mann is looking to improve on their time of 3:57.
Nike Elite 4x8 & DMR: These two events which are sponsored by Nike running to promote distance running, has a competitive field. The winning relay team will receive a special Nike prize from the Nike tent at the meet and South Carolina’s J.L. Mann looks to defend their Westlake Relays 4x8 title from last year but it want be easy because of Brookwood, Marist, St. Pius, and Westlake. In addition the same teams will also be competing in the Nike Elite DMR.
Field Events: Marist high jumper comes in with a U.S #7 ranking in the high jump of 5-8 and looks to improve. Spartanburg’s Aubreya Smith is the favorite in the long and triple jump.
Boys:
Sprints: The sprints have a pretty competitive field. Some of the top competitors are Brookwood’s Daquan Joy, Westlake’s Sirkieth Stanford, and South Pauldings Aaron Jones who all have ran below 11 seconds.
Relays: 4x1 & 4x4 Banneker & Westlake are the favorite in these two events. In addition, GA’s best all-around sprinter Ryan Clark (10.5, 21.2, 47.07) looks to help his team out to a lead or a come from behind win.
Nike Elite 4x8 & DMR: This Nike sponsored event will have a competitive field led by Brookwood, St. Pius, Spartanburg.
Field Events: Westlake’s Joseph Woodbury (6-8) and Brookwood’s Bailey Vitatoe (6-6) are the two top jumpers in the high jump. Three guys have threw over 50 feet in the shot put, so the shot put will be very competitive.
