Lashanti Williams of Burney Harris Lyons MS Named MS Girls 'Athlete of the Year'

(contributions by Timothy Lees)

MileSplit-When did you get interested in Track?

Lashanti- I was 9 years old when I got interested in track. My coach started working with me on technique and I began seeing success early.  It started with success in the long jump and then carried over to the running events.

MileSplit- What other sports does you play?

Lashanti- Basketball

MileSplit- What do you like to do off the track?

Lashanti- Off the track I spend time with my family and friends.

MileSplit- What is your favorite subject in school?

Lashanti- My favorite subject in school is Social Studies because I like to learn about people and the world.

MileSplit- Who is your favorite athlete?

Lashanti- Allyson Felix.

MileSplit- Describe your win in each event at State.

Lashanti- For each win in the individual running events, I wished for the opportunity to race the club girls, because it would have presented me with a more challenging race in the 100 and 200.

The experience overall was challenging but rewarding because I had 3 simultaneous events Saturday morning, with the 200 preliminaries, 4x100 meter relay, and the Long Jump.  My 1st round long jumps were not where they normally are because of the running events immediately before.  Luckily, the finals for Long Jump came after the afternoon lunch break.

Winning each event was gratifying for the long hours and hard work that were put in over the past several months.  It was also motivating for the rest of the team because they pushed themselves to supplement success in the other events.

MileSplit- How does it feel to be Triple State Champion?

Lashanti- It feels amazing to be a state champ and motivates me to continue training for success beyond my current level.

MileSplit- What HS will you attend next year?

Lashanti- I will attend Clarke Central High School in Athens.

MileSplit- Are you competing Summer Club Track?

Lashanti- Yes, but  unsure if I will be running for a team or unattached.

MileSplit- Do you have any goals for HS track?

Lashanti- For High School Track, my goal is to "win some rings."
