Some of the best teams and individuals in AAAAA will go head to head at
McEachern High School on Monday and Tuesday. The stakes are high as region
titles and state births could go in many directions.
100 - Terrance Farris and Kenall Williams of South Cobb have the #1 and #3
times respectivley in AAAAA going into the meet. Expect challenges from
McEachern\'s Terrell Beasley and the Potter boys (or is it boi\'s) of
Marietta.
200 - Go with a repeat in the top contenders, but this one is a little more
wide open.
400 - Not wide open, Trey Charles of Marietta has the fastest time in
Georgia at 47.75. Derrickus \"DJ\" Johnson of South Cobb leads the contenders
for the other state spot, but expect competition from runners from McEachern
and Campbell.
110H - William Wynne of McEachern has the #2 time in AAAAA with a 14.32 and
a County Championship. Damien Guio of Marietta has the #3 time in AAAAA
with a 14.62. Lonnie Burton of McEachern has the #6 time in AAAAA and beat
Guio for County runner-up. This one will leave a potential state scorer at
home.
300H - Trey Charles is again #1 coming in with a best of 37.52. Wynne
doubles back with the #3 time in AAAAA in 38.15. Expect fast times to come
out of this one.
800 - DJ of South Cobb has the #1 time in AAAAA and a County title to his
credit this season. Stephen Arnold is the defending champion and finished
4th at State last year. Throw in Brenton Shelton of McEachern and Walt
Keeshen of Kennessaw Mountain and you\'ve got a tough field.
1600 - Last year McEachern swept the 1600 with Ben Hubers and Justin Leach
doing the trick. This year Hubers is again the leader with a state leading
4:15.56. Brian Potts will try to finish off the sweep coming in with a
4:25.24 pr. Challenges will come from North Cobb\'s DiCecco (4:30.60) and
Kennesaw Mountain\'s Keeshen (4:35.00).
3200 - Hubers and Potts are back again to try to sweep the 3200 for the
second straight year. they are ranked #2 and #3 in AAAAA with 9:11 and 9:28
performances. Kennesaw Mountain, Harrison, and North Cobb all have guys
that could also break 10.
High Jump - Defending State champ Jerome McKenzie of Marietta will have his
hands full with AAAAA #2 Darrius Jiles of Harrison.
Pole Vault - Defending champ Nate Willey of Marietta is the clear favorite
with a best this season of 13\'6.
Long Jump - With a 24\' jump to his credit Trey Charles is again on top and
by a good margin. The challenge will be for second and just about anyone in
the field has a chance at the other state spot.
Triple Jump - Marietta again has the top contender in Josh Weaver as he has
a best this season over 46\'. Another open field for 2nd.
Discuss - Beau Schmookler has been on fire lately and brings a toss of 157\'
and the #3 ranking in AAAAA, but not far behind is Chris Davenport of South
Cobb who has also cleared that 150\' line this season.
Shot Put - Joe Chisholm is the county champion and AAAAA #2 with a put over
50\'7 at county.
4 x 100 - Marietta is leading the way with a 42.01 best coming last week.
South Cobb ran a 42. 24, but was DQ\'d at the McEachern Invite. Campbell
will throw out a team that can also put a scare in people. Anything can
happen in a race that has been described as the \"four heart attacks.\"
4 x 400 - Marietta has dipped under 3:20. McEachern and Campell have run
4:21. This one is always close and the team standings may ride on it.
Should be drama till the end.
Team - McEachern is the defending champs and hoping to rely on the distance
and throws for major points. Marietta has a loaded team with great sprints
and jumps. Expect the hurdles to be a major deciding factor. But as it is
every year, expect the unexpected. There will be individuals and teams
coming out of nowhere to take points and spots. Should be two fast days on
the Vegas Gold and Royal Blue mondo in P-town!
