2024 Georgia XC Performance of the Year: Malachi Burnett

Burnett Winning the Carrollton Invitational

The people have spoken. Each week this season we had a vote for the top performance. I selected the top 5 performances each week as I saw them based on both time and place in the race. In week 2, Malachi Burnett won the vote with 51.02% of the total vote count. Since he won that week he was not nominated for any more top performer votes and instead made it to the final round of voting that took place the last two weeks with all 9 regular season winners and the two top vote earners from the GHSA state meet vote. Burnett was the top vote earner a 2nd time with 42.03% of the vote going his way.

So with that, Malachi Burnett has won the performance of the year with his win at the Carrollton Invitational in a time of 15:37, which is a pretty impressive time on that course. Let's highlight his entire season and see what the Creekview senior accomplished this year.

Carrollton was actually his season debut. Normally you see some rust when you debut, but not Burnett as he won that race by 16 seconds over some stiff competition. And like I said, 15:37 is an elite time on that course.

He then won Warpath i a time of 15:33 by 12 seconds over the next closest competitor. He followed that up with a 5th place finish at Asics in a time of 15:08 and won the Cherokee County meet in a time of 15:06. He lowered his PR a little more with a time of 15:05 at Coach Wood, showing impressive consistency on fast courses as the regular season came to a close.

In the post season he cruised to a win at his sectional meet in a time of 15:23 and backed that up with a state 5A title at the GHSA State Championships in a time of 15:50, one of the fastest times of the weekend in what was the worst weather.

But the culmination of his season took place over the break where he placed 4th at Footlocker South in a new PR of 15:01, punching his ticket to San Diego for the Footlocker National Championships. Congrats on a stellar senior season, Malachi, and best of luck at nationals!
