Virtual meets aren't perfect in cross country as every course is different. But I've also noticed that in recent years head to head matchups don't mean as much as they used to, at least early on in the season. People miss races or have off days throughout the year for a wide variety of reasons. But almost everybody runs a fast course eventually, so the virtual meets actually end up being a little more accurate. And when you compile them over the course of the season, it removes the off days. Virtual meets can't ever perfectly project the state meet, because you never know who will have an off day and who will have a great day. But they do give you an idea of where everybody stacks up as the season goes on. And now that we're almost done with September, we've got a pretty good idea of what things look like.
