Will Olivia Harris defend her 200m state title this year?
Technically the region meets have already started for GHSA and will continue all week long. But everybody is on a different schedule throughout "region madness" over the next couple of weeks so this week the big meet is the Middle School State Championships which start at Parkview high school on Friday. This is one of the biggest meets all year in terms of overall participants and performances. And with a total of 1,983 total athletes set to compete and 3,023 total events entered, it could very well end up as the biggest meet of the entire season!
The middle school state meet is becoming more and more important every single year. It has grown from an event that had a few stars in it 10 years ago to a meet that has kids who are hitting top middle school times in the nation in almost every event. The coaching has exploded in this area of Georgia and the kids are continuing on to high school much more prepared for their events than ever before. It's very likely the biggest reason why we've seen more all time top ten performances in the last few years alone than we've seen in the entire time the lists have been around. The bottom line is kids are getting hooked on the sport at a younger age and devoting more of their time to training for it and that has lead to tremendous growth in the sport in Georgia. So get ready for another wild one this weekend!
On the high school front, pretty much everybody has transitioned to region and is either off this week to rest up for next week or doing their region meet this week. Good luck to all in your final tune ups for region and state!
