The Week Ahead: Final Tune Ups Before Region Championships

Track season in Georgia is very interesting. We have such wild and variable weather conditions in February. Going to those meets feels almost like a game of roulette. Will you get the one random 80 degree day that your kids are unprepared for because it was 20-30 degrees all week in practice? Will you get the rainy weather day? Will you get the really windy day? Or will you pick the weekend with the perfect conditions and all of your kids hit their personal bests right away spoiling them for future meets when you don't get perfect weather? Totally unpredictable.

Then there's March. That month feels like it's more or less our entire season. So much of the regular season excitement comes from March. There are countless meets going on every day and week. Weather can play a role sometimes, but almost everybody gets at least one meet when it's very pleasant to be a track and field athlete. And you strike while the iron is hot. That's the meet kids remember as the head into spring break. And track coaches are desperate for that spring break after spending 10-20 hours a week at meets alone. It's a thrilling, yet exhausting, month in our sport.

And then there's April. It's got a different feel. You're well rested from the break. It's warm or hot (almost) every day at practice. Sprinters are excited. And yet, it feels like everything we do this month is hyper focused on one meet and one meet only. Region. The beauty, and oftentimes the agony, of our sport is that you have to qualify for the championships. You have to perform in your event not once, but twice with both the region and sectional meet. And that doesn't even include the potential prelims at region and state either. One slip up and your season is over. It's all about region right now. Even the upcoming meets feel closer to practice meets than the real thing. Fortunately it doesn't stop kids from performing well at them. There's something about taking the pressure off and just letting them rip it one last time that can give us all some magical performances.

So that's what we're looking for this week. One last splash of magic before the gamesmanship of the region madness takes over. It'll be exciting to see what these kids produce in these circumstances.
