Girls Varsity race from Starr's mill last year
Labor day weekend used to have one big meet the Saturday before labor day (Berry Clara Bowl) that felt like the unofficial kickoff to the season. Now it seems some other meets have thrown their name into the hat as the meet that feels like that for us in 2022. Two weeks ago we said it felt like the Pickens Preview was giving off old school Berry vibes. Then last week it certainly felt that way with the Bob Blastow Invitational (despite a couple of top teams being down runners for SAT testing). But this week we've got a couple of meets that feel like they are going to be the stars of the show. We still have the Clara Bowl Invitational at Berry and I'll always think of that one very fondly. But it looks like Starr's Mill might be replacing it as the top meet of labor day weekend. The first round of team rankings will be released next week and I'm willing to bet many of the ranked teams who race this weekend will be in Fayetteville. But don't be completely sold on that one being the best meet of the weekend. The newly named Flying Biscuit Invitational looks pretty big in it's own right and it looks like there will be multiple future state meet podium teams who head to Bogart on Thursday. The Cherokee County Classic heads to the very fast Boling Park course and will certainly feature at the very least some fast middle school times. But there are some top high schools checking out their speed early season too. And finally, the meet that caught me by surprise is the one Woodland is hosting. The run at the Rock. It looks like there will be some solid competition at that one as well and don't be surprised if it delivers some of the top teams when it's all said and done. It should be a great weekend of racing as I believe the last few teams who have been holding out will FINALLY debut their season this year.
