1A Public State Meet Recap

1A Public Girls - Gordon Lee Takes Charge Early

Gordon Lee Girls won pretty comfortably in the class 1A Public state meet. They had a fairly well balanced squad and tons of competitors at the meet, but they really racked up the points in the field events on day 1. Arilyn Lee and Madolynn Loyd took 1-2 in both throws with Lee winning the shot and Loyd winning the discus. These two events accounted for almost 1/3 of their points but Ansley Dendy also won the pole vault while Samantha Cramer won the high jump. Combine that with the 16 other points they got in the field events and before we were even running they had the title all but locked up with 62 points. I'm sure it made for a stress weekend once Thursday was done.

Montgomery County girls put up a great fight and had a very balanced team attack that could have made Gordon Lee Sweat a little. but ultimately came up short and would settle for a very respectable runner up finish. They also got some points in the field events with Marley Bell winning the triple jump, finishing 2nd in the high jump, and placing 6th in the long jump on a busy day 1 for her. She would go on to win the 300m hurdles as well scoring half of her team's points by herself. But don't let that fool you into thinking they were a one woman show as Montgomery also performed very well in the relays placing 2nd in the 4x400, 4x200, and 4x100 showing their depth of talent.

Drew Charter was just barely edged out for 2nd and would settle for 3rd, only 2 points back from Montgomery County. They scored all 60 of their points on the final day of competition as Madeline Cooper won the 100 and 200 while Kameron Cook and Tushawn Williams added runner up finishes in the 100m hurdles and 400. But they also did really well in the relays when they won both the 4x100m and the 4x400m and took 4th in the 4x400.

Armuchee girls took 4th mostly on the backs of their two distance star athletes. Shelby Green and Marissa Kimple went 1-2 in the 1600 as expected with Green also winning the 800 and Kimple winning the 3200. Combine that with their 4x800m relay team taking 1st and they got the distance sweep of the four events and a cool 48 points for their efforts. Sophie Thacker scored in the 800 and their 4x400m relay team placed 7th to score enough points to get them the final trophy.

Performer of the meet - Marley Bell, Montgomery County - 1st in 300h in 46.05, 1st in TJ with 36-5.25, 2nd in HJ in 5-2, and 6th in LJ with 16-7.5

1A Public Boys - Montgomery County Wins Comfortably Coming From Behind

Montgomery County was able to pull of the win on the boys side as they came on late with most of their points on Saturday. They scored some points on Thursday led by Xavier Brantley finishing 2nd in the high jump and triple jump. But they saved most of their star power for Saturday. Like their girls, they were also able to showcase some depth by winning the 4x200 and placing 2nd in the 4x100, 4th in the 4x400, and 3rd in the 4x800 in a real team effort to get the win this weekend. Their stars also took charge on Saturday as well with Brantley winning the 110m hurdles and placing 4th in the 300mm hurdles. Jordyn Patterson got rolling when he was runner up in the 800 and scored in the 400 while Nishawn Wise and Cameron Wallace scored in the 100 and 200.

Georgia Military took 3rd place overall and they did it all with sprints and distance. They started off with a win in the 4x800 on day one and would end up taking 2nd in the 4x4 as well. Caleb Bush was able to score points in the 200 and 400 while Walker Bloodworth won the 800 and Julian Council scored in the 16 and 32. Jacob Sanford also picked up a couple of points in the 800.
