St. Pius X Boys and Chapel Hill Girls Defend Their 4A Titles

4A Boys

Matthew Harris of St. Pius X (R) scored 18 individual points for St. Pius X Saturday.

It was quite a battle between the defending 4A Boys team Champ St. Pius X and upstart Chapel Hill with Coach McClay's Golden Lions sealing the team win after Matthew Harris won the Gold medal in the 300h at 37.39 by .01 over AJ Hale of Sandy Creek. Pius had a 13 point lead over Chapel Hill (thanks mainly to Tanner Duffin sweeping the Throws events) going into Finals knowing full well that Chapel Hill could explode Saturday having super Frosh Jalen Hill. Pius raced to Silver, (behind Chapel Hill) in the 4x100 at at 42.27, getting off to a good start. Robert Jared Williams added 6 points in the 400m at 48.78 and later would sprint to 2nd in the 200m at 21.54  Matthew Harris scored 18 points in the hurdles events, taking 2nd in the 110h (14.31) and later winning a Gold in the 300h at 37.39  The Golden Lions took 4 very fast victory laps during the 4x400 placing 7th at 3:24  Jaylen Slade of Chapel Hill was the muscle car motor behind Chapel Hill's efforts, sweeping the short sprints and anchoring their 4x400 relay squad to Gold. Sandy Creek ascended the team Podium at 3rd, with Mary Persons 4th, having perhaps their best State Track meet in school history led by harrier Justin Wachtel.

AJ Hale of Sandy Creek (r) won the 400m dash going 47.50

Frosh Jaylen Slade won his first GHSA State Track title winning the 100m dash with a time of 10.66

Omarion Clemons of Sandy Creek (L) took 110h Gold going 14.21

Jonathan Myrthil from NS Columbus produced the fastest time of all State meets in the 800m run clocking a sweet time of 1:52.98

Slade of Chapel Hill added another Gold medal to his GHSA resume in the 200m dash with a winning time of 21.22


Harris of St. Pius X (L) got some payback in the 300h race besting Hale of Sandy Creek by .01 having a time of 37.39

4A Girls

Chapel Hill winning the 4x100 relay

Chapel Hill's ladies made it a 3peat in class 4A scoring 85.5 points for a comfortable margin of victory over team runnerup Sandy Creek. The Panthers were ready to pounce Saturday having 30.5 points only 1.5 behind Blessed Trinity who did not have many scoring opps remaining. The Lady Panthers began their day with a bang winning the 4x100 relay at 47.70  And took 2nd and 3rd in the 400m behind Ilene Soleyn's Silver medal effort of 56.05 and Kimora Cook's 58.17 performance. Joy Scott added a 5th place finish in the 100m dash, Chapel Hill kept the scoring onslaught in forward mode as Abigail Turnbull raced to 2nd in the 100h at 15.20  Soleyn then placed 5th in the 800m and Scott finished 4th in the 200m dash. The 2019 Champs closed out the scoring taking Gold in the 4x400 going 3:56.31 just nipping a game Sandy Creek squad at 3:56.53  Rounding out the 4 team Podium spots were Sandy Creek, Woodward Academy and Marist.
Gabrielle Grissom of Sandy Creek had a grand day first winning the 4A girls 400m dash at 55.65

Talaya Lewis of Richmond Academy (purple) sped to her first GHSA title in the 100m dash going 11.99

Chastity Pickett of Westover gave the home crowd something to scream for as she took Gold in the 100h clocking a 14.27

Gabriella Grissom of Sandy Creek ruled the 800m run crossing the finish line at 2:14.46

Talaya Lewis of Richmond Academy also ran to the win in the 200m dash posting a time of 24.86

Chapel Hill held off a fierce Sandy Creek 4x400 squad, closing their meet taking the Gold in a time of 3:56.31
