Day 1 in Albany
The big story down in Albany was Haley Hooper of Lovett overtaking Naima Turbes of Westminster down the stretch pulling off the biggest upset of the State meets thus far with Hooper posting a 5:06.27, Turbes finished at 5:10.10, Katherine Vuckovic of Westminster outlasted Frankie Muldoon from Dawson County taking 3rd (5:19.58) with Muldoon going 5:19.98
It was rumored Maggie Yankovich may be hurt, but she roared to the Girls 4A 1600m taking the lead early and never looking back with a winning time of 5:02.89, Hannah Miniutti of Blessed Trinity claimed 2nd at 5:05.09, Kathleen Maley 3rd at 5:06.42 and Oconee County's Caroline McArthur placed 4th at 5:08.54
Gracie O'Neal of Gordon Lee defended her title in A Public with a nice time of 5:16.09, Paige White from Telfair County was runnerup at 5:46 and Katelyn Taylor of ACE Charter 3rd in 5:56
The Boys down in Albany competed in the 3200m race. It was a real photo finish in the A Public race with Jake Lee from Gordon Lee taking the Gold in 10:18.96, just holding off Demarco Hernandez from Commerce HS at 10:19.02, it was another photo finish for 3rd place as Trimyrn Williams of Terrell County (10:45.29) outleaned Treveon Crayton of Hancock Central (10:45.30)
In the 4A Boys 3200 race Justin Wachtel from Mary Persons just above Macon got some redemption defeating XC nemesis Leif Andersen of Marist. Wachtel crossed the finish line at 9:24.13 trailed by Andersen going 9:31.97. Davis Potts from North Oconee raced to a Bronze medal with a 9:40 and Carter Rathur from Druid Hills took 4th at 9:43.
It came down to the wire for the 3A boys title between 3 athletes. Will Wallace of Westminster, Jackson Borden of Lovett and Zachary Roe of Westminster made it an exciting race. Wallace took the win in a photo finish of 9:29.34 to Borden's 9:29.58 with Roe a couple strides back in 9:30.19 helping the Cats' ring up 16 team points.
