5A Girls
The top-ranked ladies used Coach Wood as a “Hey, you think you can run with me? Prove it!” race led by the charging Lindsay Billings of Northview who picked up impressive runner-up honors. Her team proves they are the team to beat in 5A as they disposed of #2 Dunwoody. Those two teams have separated a little, but #3-6 are showing that they’re not going away. North Paulding and Richmond Hill have flown under my radar until this weekend and look to prove that they can finish inside the top 10 at state. Just as with the boys, will region show some separation for the podium contenders? Only time will tell. As a fan, I can’t wait!

5A Boys
Coach Wood served as a proving ground for many of the 5A squads this past weekend. Flowery Branch remains at the top of the totem pole but possibly showed some vulnerability in an otherwise dominating season up to this point. Teams ranked 2-9 are all within seconds of each other, and Coach Wood did little to sort out the mayhem. Sequoyah drops a few spots on what appears to be a down day in the varsity race, but it’s impossible to tell if their performance would have been better against the top competition. Lakeside-Evans looked strong led by Runner of the Week Christian Bowles who danced with the big boys en route to an impressive 8th place finish at Coach Wood. Starr’s Mill raced with Woodward (albeit Woodward was down a man) and raced them well at the Tiger Classic to show that they’re still a serious podium threat at State. As region approaches, will we see some separation?
