4A Boys was interesting as North Oconee really brought it for the first time this Fall winning Asics and besting North Hall. Darkhorse Johnson (Gainesville) snaked into 4th and Carrollton ran well in Florida. On the Girls end Woodward and Johnson both moved up. St.Pius X, Woodward and North Hall will tee it up at Coach Wood...
4A Boys Rankings for week ending remained the same with the exception of Carrollton jumping up to 8th after placing 11th at Atlanta Classic (18:03) The top 5 Girls remained the same, but 4 schools on the back end all moved up including Whitewater (not ranked 9-20)
After maybe having a few less teams attend than in the past, the Carrollton Orthopedic Invitational is 67 HS teams strong again and should have over 2000 runners registered for action Saturday. Many of the top programs in Georgia will run their entire squads and a few will hold out their top runners for another day... The Sunshine State has arguably three of the best boys teams in the state, two of the best girls teams in the state , the top freshman in the state on the girls side, and a potential foot locker finalist in Sukhi Khosla on the boys side lacing it up with our state's student-athletes. Its a star studded event that could turn into a barnburner depending on what teams from Ga choose to run in the Championship race....
It could be a probability that Marist is once again going to defend and sweep the 4A team titles in Track and Field, much like the War Eagles accomplished in Cross Country this past Fall. 100 points may not be out of the question if they are hitting on all cylinders. Carrollton figures to be in contention for 2nd as well as Banneker with the final 4th team honors wide open with Statesboro and Redan having the upper hand.
Its quite evident after the completion of last Saturday's round of qualifiers that class AAAA is the 2nd strongest in the GHSA. 96 MileSplit National Elite standards were achieved.. Marist was pushed to the brink in Region 6 by speedy Grady and Banneker, but q'd their State scoring threats. Carrollton trounced their Region 5 opponents in their quest for another state title. Westover took Region 1 over rival Monroe-Albany and Eagle's Landing bested upstart Griffin by 9 points in Region 4.
Carrollton's Boys are closing in on Marist in 4A, and one of the major players for the Trojans is Marquis Barnes who is selected for the 4A overall Boys 'Athlete of the Week' honors. Barnes specializes in the horizontal jumps and had marks of 45-2 and 22-11 at the Nike Panther Relays last Saturday.
Marist is strong and powerful, but they are also heavy around 44 points in the distance events making it alot tighter race with Coach Musselwhite's always dangerous Carrollton squad. Staesboro, Redan and Banneker are solid in the next 3 spots.
Carrollton, though not indicitive in the Team Power Rankings actually is in a dead heat with Marist or a clip above. Marist is top heavy in the 800-3200 events. There are 6 other schools very close to the top 4 including Banneker, Redan, Westover and Statesboro.
Here are the 4A Boys Team Power Rankings for last week ending 3-17. After the Coaches Invite Marist closed the gap on Carrollton to where its clear the 4A State Boys meet may come down to the final event. Redan and Eastside fill out the top 4 spots. These rankings were calculated by scoring the rankings as a meet. We scored 12 deep for individuals and 12 deep for relays. For example, for individuals 1st place received 12 points for their team, on down to 1 point for 12th place.
Here are the 4A Boys Team Power Rankings thru March 10th. They are a bit deceiving as Marist has some overlap in the Boys 1600 and is really has about 25 points less than displayed. Carrollton looks very strong as does Eagle's Landing, Alexander, and Redan. These rankings were calculated by scoring the rankings as a meet. We scored 16 deep for individuals and 16 deep for relays. For example, for individuals 1st place received 16 points for their team, on down to 1 point for 16th place.
