Owls Impressive in Season Opener

Freshmen pay dividends in first collegiate action

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Kennesaw State men’s track and field team opened their indoor portion of the 2011-12 season Saturday at the SIU Fast Start hosted by Southern Illinois University at the SIU Recreational Center.

Reggie Lewis led the Owls in the running events, as the freshman from Albany, Ga., finished second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.86 seconds as well as placing third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.48. Lewis was fallowed by junior Sadio Diallo who placed sixth in the 200m with a time of 22.72. Senior Kendall Parks finished second in the 60m hurdles, posting a time of 8.07.

In the distance portion of the meet, sophomore Zach Tupper placed sixth in the one mile run at a pace of 4:32.43, while freshman Josh Jenkins finished just behind in seventh with a time of 4:43.10.  Ryan Burruss claimed first place in the 3,000m run with a time of 9:09.45, and Cole Jackob finished second at 9:16.45.

In the field events, freshman Andre Dorsey secured a second place finish in the high jump with a height of 2.01m, while Casey Reynolds grabbed a sixth place finish in the shot put with a distance of 14.73m.

“I am very pleased with our performance today,” head coach Andy Eggerth said. “Between both teams we turned out 30 personal records, set eight new records and tied two school records. I don’t think we could have opened the season with a much better performance.”

The Owls will return to action again in the spring semester, as they will compete at the Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala., Jan. 12-13. For updates on the Crossplex, you can follow the team on Twitter @KSUTrackFieldXC.
