CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Kennesaw State women’s track and field team kicked off their 2011-12 Indoor season Saturday at the SIU Fast Start hosted by Southern Illinois University at the SIU Recreational Center.

The women opened the meet with a first place performance in the 4x400 meter relay as the team of LaTia Daniels, Sydney Williams, Kentrell White, and Alicia Whittle turned in a meet best of 3:55.79. Whitle also finished fourth in the 60m dash and sixth in the 200m dash, as her teammates Cynthia Davis, White and Victoria Jackson finished consecutively at third, fourth and fifth.

The Owls flourished in the distance portion of the meet as the Black and Gold placed six ladies in the top-10 of the one-mile run with freshman Vicky Winslow leading the way.

In the field events, Lashanna Barchue placed fourth in the long jump with a jump of 5.52 with Naomi Mack placing seventh with a jump of 5.28m. In the throws, Suzee Mills recorded a sixth place finish in the weight throw with a distance of 15.73m. Rebekah Ropp opened up the season with a jump of 1.68m in high jump, an indoor personal best by seven inches as she finished fifth with teammate Christie Leverette placing fourth with a jump of 1.68m.

“I am very pleased with our performance today,” head coach Andy Eggerth said. “Between both teams we turned out 30 personal records, set eight new records and tied two school records. I don’t think we could have opened the season with a much better performance.”

The Owls will return to action again in the spring semester, as they will compete at the Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala., Jan. 12-13. For updates on the Crossplex, you can follow the team on Twitter @KSUTrackFieldXC.
