KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to travel to Louisville, Ky., to run in the 2011 Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic at the Tom Sawyer State Park.
The Tom Sawyer State Park has been the site of five NAIA National Cross Country Championships, the 2007 BIG EAST Conference Championships, the 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships and is the home to the 2011 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championship and will be the site for the 2012 NCAA Division I National Championships.
Last time out, the men finished second at the Georgia State Invitational as Nabil Hamid captured first place and the Atlantic Sun Conference Runner of the Week award for his effort.
“We are expecting another good performance out of our men,” head coach Stan Sims said. “ We are letting our horses loose. After a great week of practice the guys are ready.”
The women finished fourth at the same Invitational as Heather Morris and Vicky Winslow led the Owls with a 16th and 17th place finish. The team will be without their top two runners Morris and Lauren Scott as they are being rested, but Sims still has high expectations for his young squad.
“I anticipate another good effort from the women,” Sims said. “Vicky Winslow should have another strong showing as this course fits her running style well. This is a fast course and with her strong running style she should be quick.”
The men’s team will begin at 9:30 a.m. with an 8,000 meter race as they have been placed in the Gold flight, while the women’s team will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the blue flight with a 5,000 meter race.
