KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State University Department of Athletics will honor legendary Owls Cross Country and Track and Field coach Stan Sims on Thursday morning, Sept. 1, at 10:30 a.m., for his contributions to Kennesaw State athletics over the past two decades. The reception will take place in the Hospitality Suite in the KSU Convocation Center.

Sims
, who will retire from coaching at the conclusion of the 2011 Cross Country season, joined the staff in 1992 as an assistant cross country coach before taking over as the head coach for the men’s and women’s programs in 1994. During his tenure, his cross country squads have captured 22 conference titles and have garnered five national top-10 finishes. The individual accolades his runners have achieved in cross country and track and field include four national championships, 16 All-American honors and 21 conference crowns.

Most recently, Sims, who has also taught mathematics at KSU for many years, was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010, leading his team to the league title both times. He will attempt to end his illustrious career on a high note this fall with a third straight conference championship. The men's cross country team was picked to finish first in the A-Sun preseason poll.

On hand at Thursday’s event will be senior athletic officials from the Kennesaw State Department of Athletics, as well as several of Coach Sims’ former student-athletes.
