KENNESAW, Ga. - Having already wrapped up his track season, Jaakko Nieminen couldn’t stay away from competition for long. He was selected by his home country of Finland to participate as part of their national team at the Nordic Championship in Selfoss, Iceland, May 22.
After a stellar performance in the 10,000 meters at the Raleigh Relays, Niemienen was picked to represent Finland against competition from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. His time of 30:13.79 at Raleigh broke the previous school record and gave Nieminen his third outdoor school record of the year. For Nieminen, this is something he has aspired to ever since he began as a runner.
“Getting in the national team has always been my ultimate goal in my running career, and now it happens for the first time in my career,” Nieminen said. “I feel excited and honored to represent my country this Sunday.”
