CLEMSON, S.C. - Wrapping up their final meet of the season, the Kennesaw State women’s team closed out 2011 at the Clemson Final Qualifier, Friday and Saturday. Using it as a final effort to make the NCAA Preliminaries, the squad competed against other individuals fighting for those last few spots.

Competing in their final meet at Kennesaw State, Jessica Lumpkin and Chiquita Hawthorne participated in the hammer throw on Saturday. Hawthorne finished fifth with a top throw of 47.06. Lumpkin wasn’t far behind in seventh, topping out at 45.02 meters.

In other throwing events, sophomore Suzee Mills finished fourth in the discus with a top distance of 41.51 meters. She also competed in the javelin with teammate Patricia Damron. Mills came in sixth with a 37.37 top throw while Damron set a new personal best with her 37.01 meter throw.

Racing for the first time in the 1,500 meters, Mackenzie Howe had a solid showing for her first time with a 10th place finish. She crossed the finish line in 4:39.77.

Jakia Ragland, in her last meet as an Owl, closed out her career strong in high jump. Ragland cleared a top bar of 1.61 meters, good enough for seventh. Teammate Rebekah Ropp came in right behind her in ninth.

In pole vault, sophomore Michelle Quimby, the reigning Atlantic Sun Women’s Field Athlete of the Week finished eighth. She would clear a top bar of 3.50 meters or 11 feet and 5.79 inches.

Having to finish in the top 48 of the region to qualify for NCAA Prelims, Howe currently sits in 33rd for the 10,000 meters and 48th in the 5,000.

The official list of declarations and accepted entries for the NCAA East Preliminary Round will be announced Monday, May 23, three days prior to the start of the meet in Bloomington, IN.
