ATLANTA, Ga. - Participating in their first meet of the outdoor season, the Kennesaw State women’s track and field team had several individual bests and first place finishes at the Georgia Intercollegiate Invitational, Friday and Saturday. The meet, hosted by Georgia Tech, featured schools from all across Georgia including host Tech and Georgia State.

“It was a good competition for us,” head track and field coach Andy Eggerth said. “We are coming off of some heavy training so it’s nice to still see us breaking personal records and winning handedly despite them being tired. We are only a few weeks away from conference so it’s great to see them already competing at a high level during this part of the season.”

Narrowly missing her already held school record in the 5,000 meters, Mackenzie Howe beat the competition easily with a time of 16:53.41. Her time was good enough for first place and currently gives her the best time in the Atlantic Sun Conference, sitting 30 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

Competing in four events over the course of the weekend, sophomore Suzee Mills set a new personal best in the javelin with a 43 meter throw, good enough for first place. She broke her own record by over 11 feet and gave herself the top spot on the A-Sun Conference leader board by over two meters. For Mills, this couldn’t be a greater start to her outdoor season.

“It was nice having the meet close to home so we had a lot of people in the crowd supporting us,” Mills said. “This weekend was a great starter for me and I only hope that I can build off of it.”

In her first meet of the 2011 season, Jakia Ragland would tie her school record in the high jump with a 1.70 meter leap. Her top height gives her the highest jump so far in the A-Sun this season. On the triple jump side, Jill Arthur finished in third with a top leap of 11.63 meters.

Next weekend is a busy one for the Owls with the team competing in several different meets based on their events. The four meets are the Stanford Invitational, Alabama Relays, Raleigh Relays and Yellow Jacket Invitational.
