CLEMSON, S.C. - Finishing up their two day trip to Clemson, the women’s track and field team had nine top 10 finishes in the second day of competition at the Clemson Invitational Saturday. With 17 top ten finishes total on the weekend, the squad also saw a first place victory and several personal records broken.

Competing in only their second meet of the indoor season, the team faced off with local rival Georgia Tech along with host Clemson to see where the athletes placed individually. For head track and field coach Andy Eggerth, it was a good meet to see where the athletes stood and what needed to be worked on.

“As we expected, this was largely a training competition,” Eggerth said. “We had a hard week of training but it was great to still come out and break some records after winter break. All of what we are working on now is to set ourselves up to perform well at conference.”

During their first day of competition Friday, three Owls saw themselves with new personal records in their respective events. Victoria Jackson set herself a new personal record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.78 seconds. Naomi Mack and Vynnessa Smith both achieved personal records in the high jump with heights of 1.55 and 1.50 meters, respectively.

Running in her first meet since the end of the cross country season, Heather Morris finished fifth in the 3,000 meters in a time of 10:55.92. Brittany Robinson crossed the finishline in the 800 meters in 2:30.79, well enough for an eighth place finish.

In the 400 meters, DeCoshia Boswell and Tai Dorsett would finish nine and ten, respectively while Cynthia Davis placed ninth in the 200 meters with a time of 25.84.

After a solid day of work on Friday, Jessica Lumpkin returned to the field and finish third with 12.41 meters in the shot put. Teammate Chiquita Hawthorne was right behind Lumpkin in fifth with 11.91 meters. Michelle Quimby continued her strong weekend with a fifth place finish in the pole vault. Fellow Owl Teresa Smith sat in sixth on the day with a height of 3.20 meters.

The team will get a two week break before once again returning to competition at Clemson in the Clemson Games Jan 28-29 and then on to the Niswonger Invitational Feb 4-5 in Johnson City, Tenn.
