CHARLESTON, Ill.-  Competing in their only meet during the month of December, the women’s track and field team finished sixth Friday at the Eastern Illinois Early Bird Invitational. Participating in their first meet of the season with a new coach, the squad was pitted against tough schools from the Midwest including Indiana State, Butler and Cincinnati.

After the meet, head track and field coach Andy Eggerth was very pleased with the effort of his team and what this meet showed for their future.

“Everybody was pretty much where we expected them to be,” Eggerth said. “We have been working pretty hard to learn the new techniques so this was more a training competition than anything. It was great to see Suzee and Jessica run in the 4x400. It was a great bonding experience for them. All in all, I think they competed well and gave a great effort. Going into it we are trying to develop the technique so it is tough to keep to the technique despite it not feeling comfortable. It will all come together for them when it needs to.”

Finishing the highest of any Owl on Friday, Chiquita Hawthorne would take third and fourth in the weight throw and shot put, respectively. Her distance in the weight throw, 16.73, narrowly beat out teammate Jessica Lumpkin for third place. Her fourth place distance was 16.70 meters.

Cynthia Davis also had a breakout day for the Owls, finishing the 200 meter dash in 25.58 which was good enough for third place. She also was a participant in one of Kennesaw State’s four 4x400 relay teams. Along with three of her Owl teammates, the quartet would finish 10th.

The team will get over three weeks to soak in everything they learned on Friday before hitting the track again at the Clemson Invitational Jan 7 in Clemson, S.C.
