CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- Mackenzie Howe does it again as the first runner to cross the finish line at the Powerade Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn. Friday night. The team overall came in fifth with 111 points as host University of Tennessee-Chattanooga won the overall competition with 41 points.

Howe, who was the Atlantic Sun Runner of the Week five times in 2009, led the pack with a time of 11:01. Newcomer Heather Morris was next for the Owls in 12th at 12:02.

Not surprised with the performance of Howe, coach Stan Sims was confident in the way his team performed in the meet.

“What can you say about Mackenzie Howe?” Sims said. “She ran a great race for her first competition of the year. It was really good to get our freshmen out there running for the first time. I thought Heather Morris did a great job for her first race.” 

Beating her time from last year’s race by 14 seconds, Howe showed she still in top form after a stellar 2009 season. In her mind, the meet was a good way to get her season off on the right foot.

“This meet was a good wake up call for my legs,” Howe said. “It got me into competition mode. I am still working on getting completely healthy. I know what I need to improve on, but this has really gotten me ready for next week’s meet.”

Featuring a team with four freshmen, the squad showed that the new class has a lot of depth with spectacular results from Morris, Stephanie Sawyer, Alison Wald and Haley Carson. Anxious to finally get out on the course, Morris was satisfied with her performance Friday.

“It was great to finally get out there and compete at the collegiate level,” Morris said. “It is something that I have been excited to do for a long time so this was a great experience. It was amazing to be running in a meet where every runner was really good and could push you.”
