GREENSBORO, N.C.- Five members of the Kennesaw State Owls men’s track and field squad will make history beginning on Thursday, when they compete in the program’s first-ever NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, in the East Preliminary Rounds at the Irwin Belk Track in Aggie Stadium on the campus of North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.

Each of the five achieved a mark in their respective event that is among the top-48 in the NCAA East Region this year, which gained them entry into this prestigious event. Those who place in the top-12 in their event this weekend will move on, along with the top-12 finishers of each event from the West Preliminary Rounds, to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., beginning June 9.

Sophomore Dan Grass, whose 1:49.74 mark in the 800 Meters ranks 38th in the East this year and was good enough to set a new Atlantic Sun Conference Championship record two weeks ago, is excited to get the chance to compete in a meet like this.

“This is a new level of competition, I get to go up against some of the best people in the nation, so it’s pretty exciting to get to do this,” said Grass, whose A-Sun performance also set a new Owls’ outdoor program record. “We finally have the chance to go as far as our talent will take us, and that’s a great feeling.”

This is the first time that the Owls will be competing in an NCAA Division I Outdoor Championship, as the athletic department just completed the NCAA’s mandatory, four-year re-classification process, during which time they were not eligible for post-season competition. High jumper Jerome McKinzie, who is also in the field this weekend, competed in the NCAA Indoor Championships this past March in Fayetteville, Ark.

The two-region, 48-individual per region format is a first for all competitors, as the NCAA has used a four-region preliminary format in prior years.
