ATLANTA- With just two weeks to go before the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, Kennesaw State men’s track and field will put themselves up against some of the top competition in the south on Saturday when they challenge Georgia Tech, Georgia, Clemson and Florida A&M in a five-way dual meet at the George C. Griffin Track at Georgia Tech.

Coach Don McGarey’s squad, who will be trying to repeat their championship glory of indoor season in two weeks at North Florida, and will be trying to capture their second A-Sun outdoor title since they began the program in 2005, have goals that go beyond winning conference championships.

Being eligible for NCAA Division I regional and national competition for the first time, the Owls are looking to put as many of their individuals as they can into the NCAA East Region Championship, which will run May 27-29 in Greensboro, N.C. In order to qualify, an athlete or relay team must have a score that ranks in the top-48 in the region at the regular season’s end. As it currently stands, four Owls are in the top-48 in their event, while a few more are close.

Seniors Josh McNair (Shot Put) and Jerome McKinzie (High Jump), sophomore Kendall Parks (110 Meter Hurdles), and freshman Tremaine Grant (110 Meter Hurdles) are the four that, if the regular season ended today, would be making the trip to Greensboro. Junior Gianni Catalano, who ranks 51st in the region in the 800 Meters, and the 4x100 Meter Relay tandem of Jemir Martinez, Travis Benton, Parks and Frank Minton, who are 62nd in the region in their event, have Saturday as well as the A-Sun Championships to improve their standing.

Everyone competing on Saturday will certainly have the opportunity to strive to keep up with some of the best collegiate track and field has to offer. A total of 36 athletes between Clemson, Georgia and Georgia Tech are currently in the top-48 in the NCAA East Region in their respective events.

Clemson freshman Spencer Adams will certainly give Parks and Grant a taste of the big-time in their event, as the sprinter’s 110 Meter Hurdles time of 13.79 seconds won him the ACC Outdoor Championship two weeks ago and is the 12th fastest time in the country in that event. McNair, for his part, may want to take note of Georgia Tech’s Steve Marcelle, who won the ACC’s Shot Put title with a toss of 19.03 Meters (62’5.25”), the third best throw in the nation to date this year.

The event will also be a unique one for the Owls in that it will be scored as several different dual meets. Kennesaw State will see where they score individually against Clemson, Georgia Tech, Georgia and Florida A&M.

Saturday’s event will begin at 11:45 a.m. with the Hammer Throw, and will conclude at 4 p.m. with the 4x400 Meter Relay. Live scoring will be available at deltatiming.com.
