We are officially in year two of the Cross Country sectional qualification system for the GHSA state meet. I know that no system is perfect, but this feels like the closest we can get while keeping things fair for all of the top teams and giving every team a real chance to prove they belong at the state meet. I tip my hat to the GHSA for listening to their coaches and making this process work as well as it does.
The cross country sectional meets are interesting. They're basically like a preliminary heat at a championship track meet (which, ironically, we won't have this spring). I find it hard to believe that any of the true podium contenders will be going all out tomorrow, I suspect most of them will be holding back and resting up for state. Some will have to run harder than others, but I don't know how many will be racing all out. I guess we will see. But. In cross country it's much harder to tell what place you're in, so unless you've done your research you can mess this one up if you have a tougher sectional and have your team go too easy and miss out on the state meet. I hope that doesn't happen to anybody. And I can definitely see some ids thinking it'll be an easier race than it actually is.
But also, kids like to win races. And kids like to run PR's. The weather is going to be very cool this weekend and some of these courses are definitely PR courses. I could see some kids taking advantage of their fitness this time of year and going for a fast time, or trying to win a race. That could throw a wrench into some plans from some other runners. Cross country is a great sport where it's hard to out think people during the race. So sometimes, you just have to line up and go for it. Maybe that's what we will see this weekend and it will be a dog fight out there 6-7 days before the state meet.
