Our first round of state meets start this weekend. While the GHSA State Championships are still two weeks away, we've got our first round of big meets with the GIAA State Championship and the GAPPS State Championship. These meets are not quite as deep as the GHSA fields, but there are still plenty of top runners who compete in these classifications.
We start with the GIAA state meet where we have 3 true studs all racing. Unfortunately Lucas Johnson and Eric Robinson are both teammates and Walker Elrod is in the 2A race and won't compete against them head to head. Sadly we won't get to see the best possible matchup this weekend, but we can still compare their times when it's all said and done. On the team side, the 2A race seems like a done deal and will probably go to Heritage Prep while the 3A race is intriguing with Westminster Augusta and Deerfield Windsor looking like they might be very close on paper. That could be the race of the day.
On the girls side the superstar is Jane Wangari who is one of the fastest girls in the nation. It'll be interesting to see if she chases a time or just gets the win for her team. Lauren Dunn, Emma Mathis, and Emma Jordan will have a nice duel behind her for runner up while Isabel Kelley looks to be the strong favorite in the 2A race. The 3A team race looks like it belongs to Westminster Augusta but the 2A race could be an interesting battle with Augusta Prep and Heritage prep doing battle with Edmund Burke and Westminster Christian lurking on the outside.
In the GAPPS state meet you've got Ayaan Surani as the start of the show. He should come away with the win while the team race appears to be wide open. Habersham School is a very slight favorite with Fideles Christian and Johnson Ferry right there as well. Cornerstone Prep and Konos Academy are also within striking distance here too. For the girls the team race probably belongs to Fideles Christian while the individual race is a toss up between Gaby Kenard and Grace Jerome.
