Jones, Sovnenir Lead SSU At Palmetto Classic

MT. PLEASANT, S.C.- Amara Jones and Shawn Sovnenir both won two events to lead the Savannah State track & field team in the Palmetto Classic hosted by The Citadel at the Park West Track Complex.

Jones won the women's 200m race with a time of 24.91 and the 400m event with a run of 56.34. Sovnenir captured the men's long jump with a leap of 6.86m and the triple jump with a jump of 13.69m.

The SSU women's 4x100m “B” and 4x400m “A” relay teams, Alisha Nelson, Sharonda Redfield, Eric Plump, the men's 4x400m relay team and Quentre Shannon also won their events.

The women's 4x100m “B” relay team ( Natasha Jackson, Ashley Johnson, Nakisha Thompson and Latasha Wright) won with a time of 49.86; the 4x400m relay “A” team (Mekela Martin, Aleah Hordges, Kendra Carter and Jones) had a time of 3:49.95; Nelson had a leap of 1.62m in the high jump; Redfield had a leap of 11.84m in the triple jump; Plump had a time of 21.65 in the men's 200m race; the 4x400m “A” relay team (Deshawn Lee, Tyrone McCoy, Chaz Price and Plump) had a time of 3:19.54; and Shannon had a time of 16.51 in the men's 110m hurdles.

Earning second place finishes were Carter in the 100m race (12.72); Hordges in the 400m race (57.15); Martin in the 400m hurdles (1:06.60); Redfield in the long jump (5.29m); Britteny Dean in the shot put (10.71m); Plump in the 100m (10.91); Darrius Baker in the 200m (22.12); Lee in the 400m (51.04); and the men's 4x100m “A” relay team of Lee, Plump, Baker and Price (41.93).

Baker finished third in the 100m (11.11).
