Ben Bergey Runs 6th Fastest 1600 in Georgia T&F History

Bergey winning heat 2 of the mile (with interview following the race)

Ben Bergey got some redemption tonight at the 2023 version of the RunningLane Track Championships. His time of 4:06.03, which was run en route to winning his heat of the full mile in 4:07.53, is good enough for 6th on the Georgia all time list. Bergey was a two time state champion in 7A this spring after winning the 1600 and 3200. But he had bigger goals. Unfortunately things didn't pan out last night for him in the 3200 as he "only" ran 9:13 to finish 6th in his heat. "I was pretty pissed. I didn't talk to anybody all day today" said Bergey after his mile win tonight. In the 3200 he wanted to run fast and ended up pushing the pace from the front, a strategy that proved costly in the end. But tonight he flipped the script. Bergey sat behind for 2 laps and then shot out of a cannon to the front of the race, making one of the gutsiest moves I've ever seen."Somebody else had to lead" said coach Mike Beadreau after the race. It was an incredible final 800 that saw Bergey close in 60.17 and 59.66 for his final two laps.
